How much is your water bill?

Confessionsofashopoholic · 29/08/2025 21:09

I’m with Wessex Water and our bill is just shy of £120 last month, we are a family of 3, I know water rates went up in April but this seems crazy high?

Are we using too much? Any tips to cut back?

Mine is £25pm, can’t be metered due to the way the buildings are serviced by pipes or something.

Obviously typing this from a VERY deep bath and aware I got lucky on this one.

This was the latest bill so I think it was for January-July 2025

It'll go up next time as all 6 months will include the price rise.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 29/08/2025 21:59

Ours has just gone from £80 to £160 a month 😫. I have called Southern Water who said that our usage is very high for a family of 4, but also they have just increased their prices by 41%! I have done the check to make sure we don't have a leak...we don't. We are blaming having our bathroom done a couple of years ago, now its really nice and everyone spends too long in there! Especially DS who has ridiculous showers, but has been warned now.

14.46 a month with severn trent. 2 bed house, 1 adult, 2 kids. although i am on their 'big difference scheme'
its for households with income under 24k.

Something to look forward to 😬 I'll have to double down on the importance of shorter showers to DS1!

Severn Trent - £667 a year! (Not on a meter.)

.

cornflourblue · 29/08/2025 22:06

It's included in my Council Tax so I have no idea.

I do think if we had metered water we (as a country) would be mindful of how much we use. Currently lots of warnings about conserving water.

BitterTits · 29/08/2025 22:06

£150/mth for a family of 4, went up 46% this year. Hafren Dyfrydwy. Wondering whether to go on a meter.

beewa25 · 01/12/2025 10:16

Our bill is about £1050 per year at the moment. We paid £66 per month up to September this year and then it increased to £90 per month. We're a household if 3, two of us shower every day and we do quite a lot of laundry. We have a slimline dishwasher which is on about once a day. We water the garden a lot in the summer. We're in Essex with Anglian Water.

25 per month Thames Water welfare tariff

What Is a welfare tariff?
Is the companies are giving a ‘welfare’ reduction then that c will explain why families bills are higher to subsidise it.

I think the majority are on a meter nowadays

Families can also qualify @LupaMoonhowl

indignantpigmy · 01/12/2025 10:25

Can I ask what everyone is paying per cubic metre?
We pay monthly and in September we paid £4.40 and in October it dropped to £1.40. Looking back over our bills it jumps around all over the place. I don't want to phone and ask just in case the right price is £4.40 and they put the bill up.

Glamba · 01/12/2025 10:25

I think water bills vary massively by where you are in the country. We're Southern Water and they said the average 4 person family spent over £1000pa before the recent price hike.

Power showers can often use more water than a bath these days, and more people WFH means more loo flushing etc. They say DWs are more efficient with water than washing up by hand. If you have an older washing machine and use it a lot, look at whether it's worth upgrading to one that uses less electric and water.

Glamba · 01/12/2025 10:27

Oh blast zombie thread sorry

MiddleAgedDread · 01/12/2025 10:28

@indignantpigmy it'll be on the water company websites if you want to compare them. Main ones are Northumbrian Water, United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Anglian Water, Severn Trent, Thames Water, Southern Water, Welsh Water, Wessex Water and South West Water. You could probably get ChatGPT to do it for you.

I'm in Scotland, water is included in our Council Tax and not metered.

Pedallleur · 01/12/2025 13:04

Paid it recently. 293 for 6 months, 3 X people here. That amount was less than the previous 6 months @ 350. We are on a meter

RaininSummer · 01/12/2025 13:07

One hundred pounds a month for two which us insane.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/12/2025 13:13

Are you on a meter or on Rateable Value bills?
(Trying to compare the two is like comparing ducks and chalk.)

If you're able to show your current and previous bills with the personal details blanked out I might be able to help. (I used to work for a water company billing department).

wordywitch · 01/12/2025 13:17

Ours went up from £90 earlier this year to £109 with Southern Water. We’re a family of 4 including two teens, both work from home, and DH showers twice a day, the rest of us once. We also do a lot of washing due to sports gear. Still seems bloody excessive.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/12/2025 13:20

£15 a month ... seems very cheap compared to a lot on here. We have a meter, south London.

Although one DC has recently returned home so I'm expecting it to go up with the long showers twice a day, and the washing machine on much more.

cornflourblue · 01/12/2025 18:37

I'm glad water hasn't been privatised in Scotland but not being metered (unless a business), I think does make people less cautious about water usage, even in very dry periods.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 01/12/2025 18:45

£28 a month...Anglian Water...i live alone...kids here sometimes.

ComfortFoodCafe · 01/12/2025 20:26

£24 a month on a meter too.
