Do you think you’re stylish?

I’m a very basics type person, not really into bold colours or patterns.

I’m now going through a wardrobe transition where I wear everything in it and I want to be slightly bolder .. like wearing red (I need to calm down 😂)

Do you genuinely believe you’re stylist?

(I’ve used style instead of fashion because fashion is more just following a trend which actually may not suit you, whereas having your own style is different)

I don’t think it has ever been fashionable to wear things that don’t suit you - nor do I believe it’s terribly stylish to look old fashioned and outdated, so to my mind you may have misinterpreted any distinction between style and fashion.

Wasn’t my question but ok.

Not to my mind, style is your own style, stuff that suits you but with a nod to updates eg the change in silhouette. Fashion is often wearing stuff that doesn't suit you.

Sadly, no. Not at all.

Chewbecca · 29/08/2025 14:14

No! Definitely not stylish.

But I do know which shapes and colours flatter me.

clotheslinefiasco · 29/08/2025 14:16

Nope - sadly not.

SmallChild · 29/08/2025 14:17

Style to me is not following trends, but wearing things that flatter your bodyshape. Eg I have swimmers shoulders so stick to zV or scoop necks. I also am mindful of the colours I wear. As for the latest Bodem dress or trainers count me out. A lot of my clothes are old, but classic think perfect evening dress, perfect jeans. I wear them every season no matter what the kids are wearing.

Icanttakethisanymore · 29/08/2025 14:18

I think I can look nice and create nice outfits but I wouldn't call myself stylish. I think for stylish people it's part of who they are; for me it's something I can do if I put my mind to it.

StrawberryCake8 · 29/08/2025 14:22

I like to think I'm stylish, I LOVE buying clothes, often get compliments on what I'm wearing and choosing outfits genuinely makes me happy

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 29/08/2025 14:34

Haha 😆! Me? Stylish? No. Especially in summer, because I am a sweaty pudding of a person. I do slightly better in autumn and winter. I'll make an effort if the occasion demands it, but I'm more Helena Bonham Carter in a tornado on a regular day.

coxesorangepippin · 29/08/2025 14:45

I can be stylish

It's just SO much effort

Giggorata · 29/08/2025 14:53

I have been from time to time… but sometimes just getting out of the house is all I can manage.

RubiesandRose · 29/08/2025 14:55

Yes I think I’m stylish, I’ve always loved fashion and colour palettes and putting outfits together gives me a lot of pleasure.

I certainly consider fashion because again I’m interested in shapes and trends and I also know what’s suits my shape and colouring. I mix high street pieces with more expensive items and I get lots of compliments from strangers.

I used to work in fashion, my daughter now does and we spend a lot of time chatting about all of the above. I think I just have a good eye for it and most importantly it’s something I enjoy.

Waitingfordoggo · 29/08/2025 14:58

I’m not remotely stylish but I’m ok with it. I’m the same way with home decor. I can admire stylish clothes and home furnishings that other people have created/put together, but I have no interest or ability in trying to do it myself. I just wear practical clothes and have functional things in my house. I obviously wouldn’t deliberately choose things that I think are ugly, but beyond that I don’t really care for any of it.

Can you describe an outfit that you’d wear? Like I want inspo

OP posts:
StrawberryCake8 · 29/08/2025 15:53

So I tend to be more neutral day-to-day, with Zara as my main inspo although I was just on H&M so sharing these looks, I'm early 30's for reference:

e.g. something like this outfit together https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1306242001.html

or a co-ord like this https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1303105001.html
or a t shirt, blazer and jeans with ballet pumps or trainers and accessorise with gold jewellery

and then for occasions I love looking at the likes of Never Fully Dressed, Kitri, Aje, ASOS, Mint Velvet

Do you have a specific event you're looking for or just some inspiration day to day?

WeAreJamming · 29/08/2025 15:56

Stylish is such a stretchy concept…

My friend is on modest income and is not into trends, she is tall and has kept herself fit into 50s. To me her dress sense is dowdy, but everything she wears is very considered, like her jewellery stone colours always match an accent colour in her outfit. I know she has planned her outfit to the smallest detail and made an effort. Her bag and footwear are talking to each other, if do not perfectly match. With more resources and interest in the trends, she would be considered generally very stylish.

I consider myself stylish probably in a similar way to @StrawberryCake8. I follow fashion with interest, so do not look dated, while not chasing every trend and what works for a content creator, but not for me. Clothes give me joy and I am happy to invest time in search, trying on and returning if needed. I read fashion mags and plan my outfits on Whering, I know how to create a mood with an outfit for work or a date night. It takes up a lot of brain space but I do not remember myself being any different. Growing up, I was drifting off to sleep fantasising about new matching set of hat, scarf and gloves, or matching scarf and tights, and next school year I was destined to be the sassiest. We had very little, lol, so I knitted my own clothes from age 8, then after a year undid them and re-knitted into new things with maybe a bit of other colour mixed into design. I am 47 now and can afford up to high end high street but that hunger for looking put together never subsided.
