How do I get oil spots out of coloured polo shirt?

My husband has got oil spots - I assume from cooking or eating - on his new dark green polo shirt.

Does anyone have any products or tips that might help? Washing it at 60 hasn't worked. I'm worried using Shout will leave a pale spot where I sprayed it.

Any suggestions so welcome!

Washing up liquid rubbed in neat or a little diluted, but not too diluted.

Yes, I agree with the previous poster. Rub in neat washing up liquid, then wash as normal. You can repeat the treatment if you need to.

You can buy a stain remover specifically for fats and oils. Couple of quid.

Did you let the top dry after washing?
If so you may struggle to get it out.
Fairy still do a block of green soap that is amazing for getting stains out.
I've used swarfega to get oil out of things before.
Invest in a pinny for him

Unfortunatly using a hot wash to start with might have scuppered you.
always soak in cold water first running some washing up liquid on the stain before putting in a normal 40 degree wash. If that doesn’t work repeat but try using swarfega.

Stocky stuff remover is amazing. Just put a bit on and then wash as normal. Sometimes needs two washes but only one application.

Perfectlystill · 28/08/2025 18:34

Yes t did let it dry out - in fact I only priced the stains when I was ironing it.
Thanks all - these are brilliant tips.

I found what works for this and doesn’t matter how often you’ve washed it since… only works for fat and oil stains though. Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid and rub on with fingers or old toothbrush. Leave for 10 mins. Then wash as normal.

Update: I dotted Fairy Liquid on each spot then chucked it in a 75 degree wash (nothing to lose) with a scoop of colours stain removing powder and it has come out clean!

Thanks all again for the v useful tips.
