I usually bring nice soap, cheap wine and cider, and little cheese apéro biscuits. What else would you recommend?

I got a email from Le Shuttle about the ban today. No cheese, no dairy and no meat.

BareBelliedSneetch · 28/08/2025 16:32

Pink grapefruit sirop with actual sugar in it
Danette. Dark chocolate ones. Really unsure as to how those will transmit viruses to cows.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 28/08/2025 16:32

Nuit Calme herbal tea, it’s the best

No restriction on chocolate.

No restriction on chocolate.

They are dairy though. Little dairy pudding pots.

Oh sorry, did just come back to remind myself of the name and wonder if they were.

Try not to rub the pots against passing cows, like I will try not to rub the wrappers from my butter ...

BareBelliedSneetch · 28/08/2025 16:50

They are the most UPF of dairy. A cow wouldn’t recognise them. But also delicious.

I have no intention of sharing them with an any cows.

We got an email from Le Shuttle about the ban and sadly ditched the cheese we’d bought but it wasn’t publicised at Calais or on arrival back home and no one checked.

We buy vast amounts of wine, mayonnaise, mustard, sugar with a spout on the bag which DH thinks is brilliant though I can’t help feeling guilty about the unnecessary plastic, confit duck in a tin (when permitted) and Milka
chocolate. Also this time an entire dinner service as I randomly fell in love with some plates in SuperU and couldn’t resist them!

DiscoBeat · 28/08/2025 16:55

Reblouchon cheese, wine, hand soap.

Cherrysoup · 28/08/2025 17:29

Kiri cheese spread in squares, in the children’s section. (Forgot about the ban, school trip, nobody looked at luggage)

Various sirops and various chocolate for my DH.

Garbit tabouleh, but only the fresh tomato and mint flavour, I’m a bit obsessed. It was on offer when I was there in July, first thing I saw in the supermarket, I shoved it all in the unused (and lined) sick bucket on the coach, no room in my tiny case.

Pastis, cheap version of Pernod, was 12€ as opposed to £23 for Pernod here. I then make a “tomate’ with grenadine and water. Fabulous.

Looking at posters’ varied experiences about bringing or not bringing back delicious, forbidden French cheeses, saucisson and butter etc (many on sale in UK supermarkets anyway, for a price) shows what a shitshow the whole thing is.
Occasionally it seems there are some checks at the ports, if there are enough staff or whatever, but in the main they just can’t be arsed. Farcical.

Soap. Wine. Cheese. Salami.

Tins of Confit de canard.
French cordials. (So much better than British squash!)

caringcarer · 29/08/2025 02:52

A big bag of Madeleines
Amora BBQ sauce
Burger sauce
Croissants and pan au chocolat
Creme de menthe, raspberry syrup, grenadine, peach syrup for making cocktails.
DH likes a particular pesto so always buys about 6 to bring back.
Rose onions from Roscoff. My adult DS asked me to bring him some back too.
Leonidas hand made chocolates that you pick out individually to make up a box. I bought 8 boxes as they make great gifts.
Pomegranate handwash from Super U as I love the smell.

katand2kits · 29/08/2025 05:51

Salad dressing!

Francestein · 29/08/2025 06:03

The edt I mentioned above was Bien Etre mentioned above.
Also had some other divine fragrance that has probably been lost to time. I still sniff the empty bottle. I think it cost about six euros at the time.
Also the profiteroles with brûlée toffee on top. Omg.

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 29/08/2025 06:05

Lychee liquor and olaplex from the pharmacy
I also love macaroons

those really nice biscuits that are rectangular and have a thick coating of chocolate. Can’t remember their name….

i love French supermarkets selection of showergel. I am strange I know but they just have the best flavours 😂

Petits écoliers

friskybivalves · 29/08/2025 06:49

The best thing I always bring back is Dapis gel from the pharmacie. Instant relief for mozzie bites. It’s bloody fantastic.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 29/08/2025 09:15

Sirops are obviously a big draw for lots of us. So much nicer than anything we seem to be able to get here.

It's the first time I've seen them be so thorough at Dieppe. I think they're checking for people being smuggled over the border rather than cheese to be honest.

Totally agree, our car was checked out of Caen and there was no way they were looking for cheese! Although they did check the glove compartment so maybe not just people?

fruitpastille · 29/08/2025 09:48

Panache in glass bottles (24 pack but wish I'd gone for 2)
Wine
Salt
Dijon mayo
Petit buerre biscuits

pinkpony88 · 29/08/2025 11:15

Surely it’s “good Brie?” 😆
