1.5 mile walk alone next week for my 11 year old

I'm quite nervous my child starts secondary school next week in y7 and she has to walk there as I also work in a school and need to get my 8 year also in to school across town

The walk is 1.5miles and apparently should take her 35 mins each way
There's a couple of major roads to cross without any lights or crossings on them
I know I'm panicking !
But how do I trust she will be ok
I've downloaded a tracker on to her phone
There's no one else she particularly knows going here also

Why don’t you do a practice run to put your minds at ease?

Haggisfish3 · 26/08/2025 21:30

I’m assuming you have practised it with her?

LittleGreenDuck · 26/08/2025 21:30

Has she done a practice run?

RedNine · 26/08/2025 21:30

Have you done a few practice runs? Walked the route with her and shown her the crossing places?

HouseFullOfChaos · 26/08/2025 21:31

Is there not a bus she can take? I'm be very nervous about this too. Mainly the main roads she has to cross

Branster · 26/08/2025 21:32

Unless you've already done this, do a few practice journeys together before school starts, first time you point out all the dangers like crossing the roads safely, then she leads the way, then you meet her halfway then you meet her at the destination. With phones available in case there are any questions.

i was going to suggest what the pp said. Walk the walk with your dc. Do it a couple of times if you can, once in the morning to judge traffic and once in the middle of the day.

practise crossing roads and look for safe places they could go if they’re worried/scared. Discuss this with them eg go to the Tesco express and call me. Or jimmys mum and dad live in that house so you can walk with him maybe until there.

have they walked to/from primary school?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 26/08/2025 21:35

I did more than this to school and so did my children. It sounds like a long way but both you and she will actually get used to it really quickly. Even though she doesn’t know anyone else going there there will be lots of children in the same uniform doing partially the same walk.

At what point are the roads to cross with no lights? Tell her to watch out for other kids crossing, might there be a lollipop person there if it’s near a primary school?

Make sure she’s totally confident with the route.

ninjahamster · 26/08/2025 21:41

Mine all walked 1 or 2 miles to school. Are there any friends doing the same route? It feels so daunting at first but you’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes normal x

deedeemeloy · 26/08/2025 21:51

Is there a school bus ( or a public one ) for the days the weather is really bad possibly?

Grk · 26/08/2025 21:52

Thanks yes we have practiced it both walking and biking 3 times now im still quite anxious for her though
She did walk in primary but I was often behind her as took her brother in also
She knows people but not her friends
