I fell for a scam today

I have a degree, PGCE, tech savvy and I still lost £200 to a scam today. In my defence I have my Mum coming out of hospital, her house is filthy, I am depressed with money worries and they caught me good and proper. Be very wary folks.

What was the scam so we can all avoid it

LIZS · 26/08/2025 17:56

Have you reported it , your bank may refund,

IGotBigKidsAndICannotLie · 26/08/2025 17:57

Oh no, the absolute bastards. That's really unlucky. It can happen to any of us, especially when we're busy, distracted or unhappy.

Have you reported it?

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 26/08/2025 18:00

It really can happen to anyone. They are professionals at this and whatever we learn to protect ourselves, they find a way round. It says nothing about you and everything about them.

It could have been worse and £200 feels bad but some people have thousands.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 26/08/2025 18:04

It happens to all of us. I fell for a scam website- I should have been more suspicious that the kids books were all a couple of £ cheaper than anywhere else- my card 'bounced' and trustpilot let me know it was a scam so I cancelled my card quick, but the personal details I entered have clearly been sold on as I get a lot of calls from my specific bank on my mobile now alleging fraud that are clearly scammers and this only just started.

What was the scam?

SummerFrog25 · 26/08/2025 18:06

Sorry to hear this on top of everything else you're going through!

I hope your mum is ok cx

and she afford to pay for a cleaner.some help if you can arrange it?

as others have said, talk to your bank!

This is the second d thread I've read today about sensible people falling for scams. Was it the parking fine one ?

SandStormNorm · 11/11/2025 23:59

Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Call your bank tomorrow and explain what has happened. If you used a credit card, do a chargeback. If you used a debit card, do a indemnity reversal. If your bank refuses, take them to the ombudsman. Collect all the evidence related to the scam, and write it down. With so much going on, it can be hard to recall fine details later on.

If it makes you feel any better Op, many years ago DH was a senior officer on a Major Crime Unit. He had been working all hours on a big case when he received a telephone call from his “bank”. He was asked to provide them with all his bank details so they could confirm it was him which he helpfully gave them. He put down the phone and then his brain engaged. We were lucky, he contacted his real bank within minutes so no money was lost but it is something I still love to remind him about all these years later.
