How much time do your kids spend together?

Mine are 7 and 8 and spend every waking moment together. They never ever stop talking. They are always watching their tablet together, playing together ...they literally do the same things together.

They are in the same year group at school as the eldest was held back a year.

It's wonderful but my eldest starts special school next week so for the first time in their lives they will be apart.

It'll do them good to have a break but I think they will miss eachother. I'm worried about how separating them will go.

Just trying to gauge whether my two are abnormal or whether it's ok

Mine it depends on their ages.
my 17 year old not so much time.
11 year old is spending less time.

my 8 and 5 year olds spend time together and apart. Mine go to different schools (Sen/secondary. Ended up 4 in 4 schools) which I think gives them time away from each other. But I do like them to be separated. I’m eager for them to be separated at swim lessons currently as my 5 year old relies on my 8 year old. So im hoping the older one loves up soon.

im intrigued to see how the dynamics will change when i have our baby on Friday. I suspect my 8 year old (he’s my Sen child in a Sen school) will gravitate towards the baby more as currently he’s surrounded by sisters.

Mine have never spent a minute longer together than they could help, unless it's to fight, so I'm very jealous! So obviously I have no useful experience, but I do have friends with twins who feel that having them separated at school is far better for them, despite the initial wrench.

Mine are 10 and 6...probably a couple of hours together on a school day, more on the weekend. They play Lego, Switch, and outside games together but enjoy reading or playing on their own too. Different playgrounds for KS1 and KS2 at their school so they don't really see each other during school hours.

DS3 is due in November and I'm a bit worried the age gap might create some distance between him and DS1 in particular, but hopefully I'm worrying about nothing!

From comments above it sounds like mine are unusually attached. They do rely on eachother. I feel bad letting them get to this point and still being so together

Honestly I think I'd embrace their togetherness, it sounds wonderful to me. I have two DC who refuse to spend any time together.

MutheroGod · 26/08/2025 17:27

I think its the age gap, my two are only 11 months apart and they spend pretty much all of their time together during school hols, but are in different school years. They share a bedroom and are quite dependant on each other for company, but can also fight sometimes. They have similar interests, one has ADHD so does much more talking!

Yes I think it’s the age gap and wouldn’t worry. Mine are 4 and 5 and other than being in different classes they spend all of their time together. If I spend 1 on 1 time with either of them they miss each other and ask where the other one is. I think it’s because they are both into the same things because they are close in age and play together etc. I wouldn’t worry as it could change as they grow up and they could dislike each other which would be far worse

Aw they sound so lovely! I expect it is unusual but that doesnt make it wrong.

My kids get on some of the time but also fight like cat and dog and that can be soooo stressful. You've obviously done something right! I'm sure they will adjust to being separated, whilst still maintaining a lovely relationship even if it's difficult at first.

Thank you so much for the reassurance. Sometimes it's hard to know whether we are doing ok as parents.

I battle to keep them apart to bath separately and half the time they gravitate together then too.

I guess you're all right in that it is a lovely problem to have really. Hopefully it wont be painful for them to separate

i have two boys, 11 and 7 they spend all day together and are true best friends, they still argue and annoy each other but love being together. My 11 year old is very young for his age and my 7 year old is very grown up for his age so it balances out perfectly!
