Autumn appreciation thread

I just thought I'd start a thread for those of us who truly love autumn and the joy it brings: there was one recently but it was derailed by people complaining. Thus, I want to make it clear that this thread is appreciation only: if you hate autumn that's fair enough but this isn't the thread for it. I'd like to hear what other people are looking forward to.
For me, it is the change in the air that I like the most. It isn't anything I can clearly define, it isn't a change in temperature per se. The air just seems fresher, after the still summer air. I love the food, the root vegetables and hearty stews and puddings (Diana Henry's Roast Figs Sugar Snow remains one of my favourite ever cookbooks)
The clothes.
The 'back to school' feeling.
What do you love?

Spooky season & Pumpkin everything!
Fluffy blankets, fairy lights, candles, fluffy socks, comforting soups, acorns, pinecones, crunchy leaves, foggy mornings, dark evenings, rainy weather… I could go on

Ooh fog! I love it. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with a large Gothic university building, and when you see the towers shrouded by fog, with leaves swirling around it is epic.

I love and appreciate all the seasons but in particular I love the crisp leaves underfoot (but not the slippy ones) , casseroles, cosy nights in front of the TV not feeling I ‘have’ to go out …..

No bloody flies or spiders. The flies this year are really pissing me off.

being able to put my pyjamas on at 6pm without feeling like I'm wasting my evening. Getting home from the office and showering and pyjamas straight away.

Having soup for lunch.

Misty mornings. The Autumn colours, the leaves, the peace of it all.

I always think of To Autumn by John Keats.

I love summer and hot weather but I love Autumn too. There's something about it (other than my birthday which means a week off work). I've also had enough of summer now and am ready for Autumn.

I agree. This summer has been glorious and miraculous, but I'm ready for it to change.

I’m not looking forward to the kids going back to school but I love everything else about autumn/winter. The dark nights especially, then Halloween, Bonfire and Xmas. I’m not a summer person and hate hot weather. I’m also looking forward to no flies! I have a child that hates flies and summer has been very difficult!

Autumn is beautiful for all that has already been said. It feels like a fresh start because of school days. I’m much more likely to change a habit in September rather than January.

I find it easy to dress well. Boots, jumpers, hats etc. Summer clothes make me feel a bit frumpy.

National Trust membership gets absolutely rinsed.

Costume dramas.

I go to watch football with my sons and nothing beats an October/November midweek evening when it’s cold outside so everyone’s staying in, but we wrap up all warm to go to the match.

I love the clothes and the colours of everything 🙂 it’s been such a lovely summer than I’m quite looking forward to it changing!

Autumn is my favourite month (followed closely by spring!)

I love the cooler weather, the low lying fog, the cosy evenings, getting my tights back out!

Im also looking forward to some rain, it’s been dry for too long.

I used to work at a university, I always used to buy myself a new outfit for the start of the Autumn term. It felt appropriate to have something new for Fresher's week and felt like a fresh start with fresh, excited students. I loved having a mooch around the shops trying to find that one new outfit that didn't make me look like a student but didn't make me look frumpy and like their mother!

There's so much fresh hope with the start of a new academic year.

Out for a big long walk on one of those days where its sunny and bright but cold and crisp and the leaves have a good crunch and the colours of the trees! Then a big hot cuppa and a bun to finish.

Lavender14 · 26/08/2025 14:05

Also a big fan of fog making everything feel a bit mysterious!

LlynTegid · 26/08/2025 14:05

I love the different colours of leaves, and that the timing is not the same each year.

AliceMaforethought · 26/08/2025 14:15

I'll add another: apples. The glorious, glorious apples.

I'm another who loves the new start feeling! 30 years of teaching means that this is always the beginning of a new year for me, and like a pp I'm much more likely to change a habit, or feel full of enthusiasm than I do on 1 Jan.

I like a new notebook, crunchy leaves, crisp sunny, autumn days. I like the change in colour in nature. I like the frosty mornings, and wrapping up warmly. I like cosy evenings by the fire, and not having to go out.

stayathomer · 26/08/2025 14:31

Closing the curtains at night with pjs on early, books, the amazing trees with different coloured leaves, stews, tea … swoon!!!!

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 26/08/2025 14:39

Cold clear mornings with a bright blue sky and all the leaves turning.
Pumpkins and squash in the allotment, onions hung up to dry, apples and pears and blackberries.
Mushroom hunting! Every year I make mushroom ketchup from the shaggy ink caps.
And I love a bit of pumpkin spice.

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 26/08/2025 15:09

Roasted pumpkin, pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie. Not the bland orange halloween pumpkins - all the tasty, nutty and rich Italian, American and Japanese ones.

I've tried growing them again this year and a massive fail so as soon as they are in the shops I'm hoarding them.
