Dentist appointment and I'm panicking

In less than two hours I've got an appointment for a filling. It's on a lower front tooth. I have been panicking about today since Friday. I've always been phobic and not that long ago I had to have a tooth out.
Ive cancelled and re arranged this appointment three times in as many months.
Dont know the point of this post really other than to get it out how utterly anxious I am.

Handhold from me OP, I've got my first visit to a dentist tomorrow for the first time in 12 years for the same reason as you.

You'll feel so much happier once it's done, that's what I'm clinging onto anyway. You can do this!

DiscoBob · 26/08/2025 09:48

A filling is nothing compared to having a tooth out. So please try not to worry. It won't take long and the only very brief pain will be the injection. Or they might not even need to do an injection.

Tell the dentist you're feeling nervous. They should treat you with kindness and explain everything clearly.

Could you use the appointment just to meet the dentist and have a chat with him/her about how terrified you are ? He may then spend a bit of time to calm you down , then possibly make another appointment to have the procedure. I realise you would have to pay twice but that may be ok with you .
I was petrified of dentists and didn’t go for years but my DIL is a dental nurse and took me to meet her dentist. H was lovely and was able to calm me down . I think the new dentists being trained these days are much more caring .

It’s important you tell your dentist how nervous you are, so they can talk you through what’s happening and reassure you that it won’t hurt. They’ll stop whenever you want them to.

Also, it will not be half as bad as you’re building it up to be and be over quickly! Good luck.

Clitmandu · 26/08/2025 09:51

You can do it! It will be over with by lunch time and then you don’t have to think about it again.
good luck.

WellyBellyBoo · 26/08/2025 09:51

Hand hold. Make sure you tell the dentist or nurse that you are anxious. They are used to it and will do all they can to make it easier. Please go to your appointment. My DH lost a tooth after putting off the dentist for ages. You've told us you're going so why not agree to come back here afterwards and tell us it went OK?

Glammar · 26/08/2025 09:56

Thankyou everyone. I go to a practice that specialises in nervous patients. My dentist is aware of how frightened I am. I'll no doubt walk in there and cry like I did last time. My main issue is being numbed I hate the feeling of it. They do have a special piece of kit there called a quick sleeper that injects differently to a normal syringe and isn't supposed to numb lips and tongue - however I still do not like it.

Im leaving in 30 minutes 😦 appointment is at 11am

Just think- in less than 3 hours it'll all be over and you won't have any pain!

I know exactly how you feel. Tell the dentist you're anxious, they'll be able to help you. It really will be alright.

DH is coming with me, I've already said im
nit sure I'm going to be able to let them do anything. DH in his wisdom though has said I'll only have to go through it all again if I don't get anything done today.

The tooth has been niggling me for the last few weeks as well.

I'm like this, my dentist let's me wear headphones and listen to music.

I have had 6 little fillings in my front teeth, some about 10 years ago, the last about 5 years ago.
The numbing part is, I agree, the worst bit, but it's also the quickest, so once that is done the rest is plain sailing. Apart from a small scratch in the gum, everything else is painless, just uncomfortable. I totally understand your nerves, it's entirely natural. Just remember, nobody likes it, but it is a temporary discomfort, and afterwards if you are anything like me you will be relieved, and think you were worrying unnecessarily. 💐

I think this is a filling that needs replacing. My brain shut off when he told me it needed doing.
I hate the fact I make myself feel physically sick days before my appointment.

I will come back to update when I've been.

Deep breaths and think nice thoughts. I don't mean to minimise your discomfort, but you can get through this. Be strong. It'll soon be behind you.

Glammar · 26/08/2025 12:11

All done and I am fine. I had it done without being numbed. My dentist is so lovely and he listened to me and my fears.

Well done OP! Glad it went ok.

I had a tooth out recently after chipping it on some food. I was terrified as I hadn’t been for years! But it was absolutely fine! They used some numbing gel on my gums first and I didn’t feel any of the injections, and I had to have extra as I wasn’t fully numb. The fear was worse than the experience.
Take it as a win, you should be proud.

TheOliveFinch · 26/08/2025 12:49

Well done op , glad you got it done , hopefully as this was a good experience it may make future visits easier
