Post-op wisdom tooth removal pain

Hello all

As the title suggests, I had my two lower wisdom teeth removed last Thursday under general anaesthetic. They were impacted and causing pain etc. it all went well and I was discharged home shortly after.

I’ve been taking regular paracetamol (sometimes co-codamol) and ibuprofen. I’ve been trying to stretch them out a little today but I have paid the price. My jaw is throbbing Sad the pain is just awful. I’ve been having the pain in the night when the meds wear off so I’ve popped more and after half an hour they take affect.

When I wake up in the morning my breath is awful but it gets better throughout the day. I’ve checked my mouth, I have stitches, so I can’t tell if the clot has dislodged and caused a dry socket. I’ve been regularly gently rinsing with salt water. There’s nothing oozing and it looks clean, one side is more tender than the other.

When will it get better? Trying to look after the kids and be a fun mum but gosh it’s so hard, can’t even hug them properly as I’m terrified they’re going to knock my jaw Sad

I think I’ll call the hospital tomorrow.

has anyone been through similar?

Buy some Nuromol, it's ibuprofen and paracetamol combined and so much more effective

Did the hospital prescribe antibiotics OP? Sounds like you’ve developed an infection rather than a dry socket.

No, sadly not. Just advised me to salt water rinse as much as I could, which I’m doing 4/5 times a day, especially after eating.

Might be a bit TMI but there is some white stuff with a hint of green by one of the sites, I was told this was new tissue growth but the green has thrown me off.

I do remember suffering for quite a few days after having all four of mine out (two impacted), I would count the minutes until I could take more pain meds. A solid week until I could fully function again. Pretty gutted when a couple of years later I called my brother the day after he’d had his out and he was in the pub, not suffering much at all!

I am on countdown! It’s awful. Because I was out today, barely functioning, I’m sure I took some sooner than I should have. I’d be so envious of your brother!!

Shouldn't have a bad taste in your mouth, more than likely an infection .

I had mine surgically removed a few years ago. It took about a week before the pain was under control. I did get an infection though. It felt like someone was driving knitting needles into the gaps so I got antibiotics. Maybe check with the dentist that it’s all healing properly.

Two dry sockets. They’ve been packed and I’m
on antibiotics. I still feel terrible so hoping it’s only upwards from now. Thanks for all of your lovely replies.

Oh you poor poppet - glad you managed to get treated though. Fingers crossed for the speediest of all speedy recoveries.

If you need a grin, this might make you laugh. When I had my wisdoms out, my boyfriend at the time offered to collect me from the hospital and take me back to his for a few nights to recuperate - lovely idea right? Wrong! He was supposed to come and get me at 12pm... no sign of him... an hour goes by, two hours... his phone is off. I'm left sitting in the waiting room as I had a GE and wasn't allowed to leave by myself. At 5pm he finally rocks up with a silly grin on his face - he had bumped into a friend, gone for 'a' drink (for five hours?!), his battery had died and he had lost track of time. He knew he had been an arse though because he said: "I'm so sorry - I did get you a present to apologise."

What was the present?

He'd only been to Hawkins Bloody Bazaar and bought me a balloon animal kit.

Balloons? That you blow up? When I can't use my mouth properly because I've had oral surgery...

I was quite impressed that even with a numb face and a mouth full of stitches I was still able to articulate some choice swear words in response to his 'present'!
