Help identifying part of a classical piece (maybe Mozart?)

Hello, I feel sure that someone out there can help with this in a matter of minutes, and save me a few hours.
I'm trying to identify a theme from (I think) one of the middle movements of a piece of classical music. I think it's Mozart (a symphony, I reckon), and pretty sure the melody is played by the clarinet.
Don't know what key it's actually in, so I'm giving notation in C major here as it's easiest.
It's three beats to a bar. Capital letters are minims, lower case are crotchets and italics are quavers. In each phrase, the second note is the g below the first note, then it jumps up so that most of the following notes are above the first note. If that makes sense....

Any ideas, anyone?? I can offer a great deal of gratitude as your prize.

C g e d c b d f e d c b (rest rest)
D g f e d c e g e f d c (rest rest)

Thank you!!!

Possibly Eine kleine Nachtmusik?

LessOfThis · 25/08/2025 20:32

I was hoping this would be an excellent RickRoll! But sorry, I can’t help!

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 25/08/2025 20:36

Love the notation, but apart from a distant tug in the dim recesses of my memory, I've got nothing. Sorry.

Possibly Eine kleine Nachtmusik?

Ahhh but that's all strings and I'm sure this is played by a clarinet. But thank you!!

Nope, sorry!! But thanks for wanting to help - I know my title isn't exactly a crowd-puller!

Mozart Symphony no 39 (K543) 3rd movement 2nd theme.
Possibly...

Ionacat · 25/08/2025 20:50

Menuetto from Mozart’s clarinet quintet?

Appreciation of my notation earns you a little helping of my gratitude prize, anyway!

Have you considered Mozart's clarinet concerto? Second movement?

LightCameraBitchSmile · 25/08/2025 20:53

Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter) or
Serenade No. 10 Gran Partita?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/08/2025 20:53

Looks right

Yes this is it!!! Thank you so much, bags and bags of gratitude, I knew somebody would be able to help.

My mum used to sing it around the house when I was small (about fifty years ago) and I found out what it was later on, and then forgot again.

You've helped me more than you know. Thank you again!

This is amazing !

For future reference, you can hum a tune into the Google app by clicking the microphone and it can identify a song. It’s pretty cool!

The most random and adorable thing I've seen for quite some time.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats is amazing.

Full disclosure - my mum has passed away and this was a front-runner for some of her funeral music - but we couldn't remember what it was, and there's so much else to organize that there just isn't time to listen to Mozart's complete symphonies.

As I may have said already, I'm so so grateful.🎶

I tried earlier with Shazam, but it basically laughed in my face (not sure how well-stocked it is with third-movements-of-things - or maybe my humming is just crap). And I couldn't make head or tail of the Google one, but lovely to have confirmation that that one does work, for future reference. Thank you!

You are very welcome, very sorry to hear about your mother, and I'm very happy to have helped - but you really have Barlow and Morgenstern to thank.
Modulate everything into C (as you did) and look it up in the index - then check against the score to confirm. Took me about 30 seconds. It's a really useful book!

That's extraordinary - I had no idea that book existed, and it sounds very much like something I would very much like. I will seek it out.

The gratitude just keeps on coming.

I am in awe of you all. OP for being able to write down the notes and the genius who identified the piece from this.

Wow.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/08/2025 21:44

@FalsePerceptions They didn't stop at musical themes - they did an Opera and song (lieder) volume as well.
They are quite old - originally compiled in the 1950s (my editions date from the 1980s) and the contents reflect the concert repertoire of the time but they are really useful.
Look to be out of print at present but copies at not stupid prices on Amazon and Abebooks.

Thank you - I've now ordered the Musical Themes one.

I've also suddenly realised how similar the second theme of the fourth movement of Beethoven's 5th is to this Mozart theme. And the Morgenstern book must be a really useful way to spot similarities like that. So I've got that to look forward to as well now.

I'm so glad I started this thread.

You aren't wrong 😁
The Mozart is M970, the Beethoven B961 - only 5 apart in the index.
The thing I find amazing is that you generally only need the first 7 or 8 pitches to identify a piece, yiu don't need any rhythmic details at all to use the index.
Enjoy the book - it does take you down some very curious rabbit holes.
