What happened to the Covid-19 virus?

Labubus · 25/08/2025 12:40

Is the COVID-19 virus still going around? Or has the vaccine controlled it?

I recently travelled to a few different countries in SE Asia (where lockdown was stricter than UK), and it wasn’t mentioned once!

I currently have it - as confirmed by two tests.

This time round it's not been as violent as the first time, about 2 years ago which went into pleurisy and I had a day of not being able to raise my head and high temperatures.

However this time it feels like a heavy head cold mostly, not totally stuck in bed, but exhaustion, sinus pain, headache, totally stuffed up and limbs aching. I don't normally get colds badly, which is why I tested.

I also have a really painful rash. I've got clusters of what look a bit like large red boils in various places. They are immensely itchy and very painful if knocked. I'm on day 5 and honestly I don't feel much better than day 1.
I'm also beginning to feel an ache in my chest that last time was the beginning of pleurisy, so I'm hoping that's not coming back.

I need to message my line manager and ask what he wants me to do, because I'm capable of getting into work and working, but we have vulnerable people there. My job doesn't brilliantly translate to wfh, but I can do something if I drive in and pick up my laptop, and I was on annual leave last week so there is a lot to do.

Clusters of red boils doesn’t sound like a typical covid symptom. Could you have been exposed to monkey pox or have you considered that? The mixture of symptoms would fit.

chunkybear · 25/08/2025 14:15

Yes, but people have some immmunity now as it’s been around a while and it’s mutated too so not as aggressive as sone strains

Amethystanddiamonds · 25/08/2025 14:17

It's still circulating but it's become a 'cold' virus like other coronaviruses. I do suspect though that my DS has just had COVID (but didn't test). He was very ill. The other 3 of us in the house were absolutely fine but we all get vaccinated yearly and DS isn't eligible now and was too young to be vaccinated originally.

it’s still here and continues to mutate like flu does. It’s unlikely to disappear. My friend had it last month and was quite poorly for about ten days - gave me a bit of a start because I’d kind of forgotten about it.

smallglassbottle · 25/08/2025 14:19

I get it every year and every time I'm sicker than the first time I had it. I could barely get downstairs to feed the cats last November.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 25/08/2025 14:20

I had it last week and was really unwell for several days. And in June. Both times on return from holiday.

Sarahjane9 · 25/08/2025 14:21

Covid is still here, cases are as high or higher than they were in 2020 and 2021, but governments decided that it was too expensive and inconvenient to keep controlling it so they just gave up and most people decided to pretend it has disappeared. It's causing a lower number of deaths in the acute stage than it did at first, however it is triggering a huge number of chronic health issues in the population, including strokes, blood clots, and various other lovely things....

No. It's in patches, mostly on my limbs, but the first (and worst) patch was on one of my hips.
I initially thought I'd been bitten - as we were away I was checking the bed for bedbugs, but dh (who is normally an excellent protection against being bitten as he tastes so much better) had none, and there isn't a bite centre.

Currently in patches of 3-9 spots on:
Left top of arm (pretty much all over)
Left lower arm just below elbow
Left elbow
Left hip
Right shoulder blade
Right next to arm pit
Right elbow
Right knee
Right mid lower leg
Centre lower back
Possibly a couple round hair line

The worst look a bit like chickenpox spots, but around 1cm across and filled with something which makes the middle a bit whiter. I've had chickenpox and it's not where I get shingles (that's centre back just under my brastrap!)

Edited

That sounds sore!

I have tested positive for covid, and it is listed as one of the less common symptoms - basically a viral rash, which you can get with any virus.

It's possible I've been exposed, but unlikely. We've just been on holiday (UK) and did do a lot of public transport but haven't had prolonged contact with anyone other than dh (who is disgustingly healthy!).

I've just looked at pictures, and although they do initially look a bit like them, they're not going into scars (although I suppose there's still time).
I also got the first spots before I felt ill, which is the wrong way round for monkey pox.

mtaylorfan · 26/08/2025 13:25

I think I have the new variant - nausea, diarrhoea, very familiar headache, sore throat, acid reflux, bloating, fatigue.

Unwell since Friday.

I felt Covid-y over the weekend, but didn't have cold symptoms, so assumed I'd eaten something off. Then looked up the new variant today and it matches.

Skinny jeans are like leggings.

They'll NEVER go away 🤣🤣

This.

Plus covid still very much a thing, I work in health care and whole wards get closed when a few patients catch the virus at the same time

Amillionpebbles · 26/08/2025 16:58

Mixed bag. The vaccine helped a lot in the acute phase, lowering hospitalisations and deaths. The vaccine works for a limited time, but is available to a very restricted pool of people (compared to other countries). Lots of vaccines were bizarrely destroyed rather than offered to people. Some people (again very restricted compared to other countries) are eligible for antivirals, with varying degrees of success in being able to actually access them.
There were about 3m with long covid in England last year, but don’t know how much that has increased to now. Some people won’t have any symptoms, but will still have health issues or increased risk of health issues as a result of their infection. It can seem to disable people irrespective of age, health, fitness, severity of symptoms. Some occupations are obviously more likely to have long covid where they are heavily exposed e.g. teachers, healthcare workers.

So…a mixed bag. We seem to have several waves a year and are in one at the moment. Vaccine has helped to reduce the severity of the acute stage, but covid is poorly controlled (even in hospitals) and is forecast to cost billions to the economy due to long covid.

CreepyCoupe · 26/08/2025 17:02

It’s still around on mumsnet, but this is the only place I see it mentioned.

A few of my team are full of cold at the moment, but no-one tests anymore (that I know of).

Cadenza12 · 26/08/2025 17:03

I had it in April along with 2 members of my family. Heavy cold, felt ill for a couple of days then a week gradually getting better. So unwell that I needed help looking after the dog. It's still about.

honeyfox · 26/08/2025 17:05

Off work with it at the moment, think my dad gave it to me and my husband but I was the only one who tested. Guy in my office had it two weeks ago too.

Notagain75 · 26/08/2025 17:09

Yes it is still around. I heard about someone in their 30s who had it very badly recently.
I am eligible for the vaccine and have had every booster available which I'm sure has boosted my immunity so luckily I haven't had it since the early days when I had it relatively mildly.

Lucie11 · 26/08/2025 17:18

I caught it in mid July, only tested as after 6 days of feeling really unwell I suspected it was more than just a cold.
Followed by a period 10 days early that lasted almost a fortnight!
I still don’t feel totally well, had digestion issues for a few weeks and seem to have been left with low level pelvic pain. And aching legs.
I think that Covid can be quite sneaky and take a good while to get out of your system.

What a stupid comment!

It is still around in real life, but most people don't test.

DH is in hospital and has had a covid test because he is waiting for a serious operation. The NHS clearly know that covid is still doing the rounds.

I think I'd be inclined to believe a medical professional than a random poster.

LittleBitofBread · 26/08/2025 17:27

I suspect I have it. Slightly upset stomach/feeling of indigestion even when I haven't eaten, sneezing, runny nose, dry throat, not a headache but a sort of 'ringing' head, suspiciously fatigued.
Whatever it is I wish it would piss off.

I was being ironic, as it still gets mentioned a lot on here.

Sorry, I misssed the irony. I'm feeling a little stressed just now.
