Think I've broken my wrist, cancel clients or not?

Self employed dog walker here. Fell and landed horribly on my left wrist yesterday. Bent back on landing, bloody hurts!
I had client after and managed to walk her but driving there was excruciating!
Changing gear nearly made me puke.
I've been up in pain and due to walk a 40kg dog shortly but I don't think I can!
I've never had a day sick in 18 months but don't want to let anyone down.
Wwyd?

Go to A&E 🙄

Houndsahollering · 25/08/2025 06:11

Cancel today’s clients and get yourself to A&E or an Urgent Treatment Centre (make sure it offers X-ray facilities).
Do NOT drive to A&E; get an Uber or a lift with a friend.
Hope you’re seen quickly.

Go to a&e and get treatment today
your clients will have to understand
if you have broken it you need to get sorted especially if you have a physical job

Could have a fractured scaphoid which needs immobilising. Sensible thing to do would be to cancel. These things happen! Good luck

verycloakanddaggers · 25/08/2025 06:28

You can't drive until it has been checked. You could cause serious harm to yourself or someone else. Your insurance is invalid too as you are clearly unfit to drive.

The only rational course of action is to cancel your clients and go to A&E (by taxi or lift).

I don't understand what you're doing here. Your sickness record is irrelevant.

InfoSecInTheCity · 25/08/2025 06:47

When it comes to driving, the requirement is that you have to be capable of completing all manoeuvres safely, so with your wrist as it is right now regardless of whether it’s actually a break or not, can you safely perform an emergency stop, turn the steering wheel for a sharp turn, apply the hand brake etc

If the answer to that is not really or only with significant pain that could compromise your ability to complete the move then you shouldn’t be driving.

With regard walking the dogs, a 40kg dog can pull really hard and you don’t have the ability to use both hands to control the lead. They could do you some real damage to an already hurt wrist or you could end up unable to hold on to the dog trying to chase them down. I know you don’t want to let people down but injuries and sickness happen and the best thing is to address it immediately and recover as quickly as possible.

Go and get checked over, find out what damage is done and then put a plan in place for recovery so that you can get back to work in a safe and sensible way.

I’d cancel today’s clients, and go to A&E.

Thank you, I needed to hear this! Working on my own, I often doubt myself! Not easy.
DH taking me to a&e now. Hoping I'm not wasting their time!

Luckily it should be relatively quiet at this time. fingers crossed you get seen quickly

Sirzy · 25/08/2025 07:59

Even if it’s not broken you aren’t wasting A and E time because the only way that can be found out is getting it checked.

fingers crossed it heals quickly whatever it is

You aren’t wasting anyone’s time - broken or not the service date there to distinguish this fact for you as you don’t have x ray vision!

and sprains are just as painful so you can’t tell without getting its x rayed.

ExcellentDesign · 25/08/2025 08:03

Not wasting their time, that's what they are there for. Hope you don't have to wait too long.

lljkk · 25/08/2025 11:23

. for update.
Hopefully whatever it is, will heal fast. x

From one self-employed dog walker to another - your health is the most important thing. I hope you heal quickly!

thank you. I do try to take care of myself but this was a freak accident!
I have income protection insurance but its the letting down of clients I hate! I've built a reputation!
Anyhow, its broken and in a cast for 4-6 weeks. Just messaging clients and offering half hour walks from home during that time. I'm worried I'll lose my new clients but it is what it is I guess.

thanks all x
