Florida holiday - awful weather

Just a moan really 🙁Arrived in Florida, near Clearwater, for a beach holiday with teens and it’s rained and thundered for 4 days now. I’m beyond fed up. We have 6 days left and forecast is nothing but rain.

Have you been to Disney or planning to? Hope you have fun despite the weather!

BananaBreadWithCustard · 25/08/2025 07:25

How annoying OP. We’re off to Florida next month and this is my fear too. I had a similar experience in Spain earlier this year. It went from drizzle to full on downpours all blooming week, just as predicted at the BBC. The BBC also predicted that it would be bright sunshine from around 10am on our final day and into the next week. Yup, you guessed it. We were sipping pina colada’s by the pool at 10am waiting for our coach on the last day wishing we’d booked for the following week 🤷‍♀️ Annoying but we had a good time. Are there any good indoor attractions near where you are?

millymollyminging · 25/08/2025 07:43

we went to Disney Florida in 2018 and it bloody snowed! First snow they’d had in 30 years! Everyone was dressed for warm weather and were freezing. Be grateful it’s only rain. 😂😂

There are loads of museums in and around Sarasota. It may not be what you planned to do on holiday but I’m sure the Ringling Museum would be enjoyed by the whole family.https://www.ringling.org

PetiteBlondeDuBoulevardBrune · 25/08/2025 08:55

That is so annoying! The weather really does have an impact :( I hope you get to enjoy some dry activities, nice restaurants etc

Giddykiddy · 25/08/2025 10:01

We also went once in August without realising the weather is very temperamental - commiserations - it should at least be intermittent - fingers crossed

Tiswa · 25/08/2025 10:09

That’s the thing you can’t predict or understand Florida weather just hope for the best.

we go at December and in the times we have been we have had heat or up to 30c we have had cold and ice at 0c (didn’t snow) we have had fog, tornado warnings, torrential rain and sometimes in a 10 day period a swing of up to 15 degrees one day it can be cold and you need a lot of layers the next day you wake up and it is boiling hot!

it is so damn unpredictable

Florencesndzebedee · 25/08/2025 11:02

Do the theme parks, lots of indoor rides or go to the Space Kennedy Centre.
Or relocate to another part of the state with better weather if you can afford the hit.

TonTonMacoute · 25/08/2025 11:09

That's so depressing OP, I'm sorry. Hurricane season or not, it does sound as if you've been particularly unlucky.
We went to Brittany every year for years, the weather was usually fab, but on two years it just rained all the time and one year average temperature was a good 10 degrees lower than normal. You just get these bad years, but it hurts more on an expensive holiday.

Cobbstown · 25/08/2025 11:15

I'd be gutted too. Yes a downpour or two each day and maybe a thunder storm or two, but no way would I have expected constant rain. It is very unlucky and I can understand why you are feeling a bit sad.

Chewbecca · 25/08/2025 11:16

I would check weather forecast in surrounding areas and chase the dry / sun if I were you.

usedtobeaylis · 25/08/2025 11:18

I don't think pp can just write off the time of year you choose to go as the reason for there being a lot of storms ffs. If you go Florida in the summer you're risking a lot of storms. That's it, that's the basic truth. It's not your fault, it just is.

paddyclampster · 25/08/2025 13:51

Are you able to head somewhere else?

When I was young and travelling, we had the same experience on the gulf coast. We sacked off our accommodation and booked onto a cheap motel in the pan handle - had wall to wall sun up there!

caffelattetogo · 25/08/2025 14:15

It’s a couple of hours away, but have you been to the kennedy space centre. It’s mostly indoors, and a great day out.

caffelattetogo · 25/08/2025 14:19

The Everglades are beautiful too, and there are some fun boat trips that would be good in the rain.

caffelattetogo · 25/08/2025 14:21

Also, amtrak has some routes through florida that would give you the option to explore further afield - I love a train trip!

This is Florida in August!! Terrible time of year to go

Really? We have been twice in August and the weather was lovely. Yes, there were thunderstorms late afternoon but they soon cleared and the sun returned.

Zanatdy · 25/08/2025 15:19

Unlucky to get constant rain in August. I’ve been to Florida 3 times in August and had daily rain, but generally an hour or two. One year it rained all afternoon. The year we went to Cuba it rained for 3-4 days and Florida had a hurricane that August. Hopefully it improves soon.

Wheech · 25/08/2025 15:26

Nobody wants rain on holiday but it really stings to leave the UK where I assume you're from OP, and get rain when you went hoping for sun. Especially when it's sunny at home just now (I'm also abroad at the moment but for work).

Many years ago my parents took us to Florida and on one day it rained quite a lot and we were in Disney. It was actually a brilliant time to be there because there were very small queues because of the weather and they seemed to be very well organised selling waterproof ponchos etc. I know a pp mentioned rides possibly being closed if there are storms but otherwise it could be a really great opportunity to see the theme parks.

Kbroughton · 26/08/2025 19:51

Actually it's not to with the rainy season. All of central and eastern USA have been hit by a weather front that's unusual this time of year bringing cooler temperatures and unsettled weather Chicago is 10 degrees lower than usual. I go to florida from mid to end August every year and is always rainy but only for short periods of time. This year for the last three days it was much cooler than I have known out on 10 years. So you have been unlucky. It's frustrating but just like any other holiday when you have fluke weather xx
