Is it worth getting marks reviewed if it was 7 marks from the boundary?

Just wondering if it's worth getting a review, DD was 7 marks off a 7 in English literature. She's not bothered and it doesn't make a difference to her getting into the course she wants to do (they've already confirmed her place) but I feel like maybe we should see as it might be good to have the higher grade later on in life?

I wouldn’t bother in these circumstances. It would be different if it meant the difference between a pass or not, or a grade needed to access whatever next step the student had planned.

No.

What if it dropped to a 5?

No. Our school recommends max of 3 marks. Your money, but I’d say it’s not going to happen. I have 2 students who are 1 mark off an 8, we’ll request papers, which is free, but a review costs so we’ll check first.

It’s too many marks, not worth it. I’m getting one remarked but it was only 1 mark off.

Fair point, could go down or up!

Ask (nicely) if the teacher will access the papers and review them first. We’ve had two in recent years where the marks for an entire question had been missed off the calculation, so those changed more than 7 marks. Usually though, no. Only recommended if within 3 marks.

Definitely not unless you suspect an error like not having marked a question, in which case ask for the papers back and see if the teacher will have a look.

Edexcel GCSE English literature needed 115 for a 7, and 101 for a 6.
So 7 marks off is almost exactly in the middle (108) so you're as likely to go down to a 5 as up to a 7.

Gelertoe194 · 24/08/2025 21:25

No. What difference would it make to her in the future if she had a 7 instead of a 6?

As a pp has said, she could drop grades after a remark! Not worth the risk.

Gelertoe194 · 24/08/2025 21:26

I also don’t think you should mention it to her, she should feel very proud of her solid pass, it’s good enough.

This is what I was wondering, that it might be too much off anyway. Thanks for the info.

Thank you, I hadn't looked at the boundary for the grade below, that's a good point.

Oh absolutely! It's just she only sat four due to a heath condition and disability, so she's already at a disadvantage and I didn't want to fail her by not trying if it was worth doing. I just want her to have as much chance at a future as she possibly can have. She's worked so hard and overcome so much.
