I am in the process of converting an attached boiler room, formerly washhouse, to a utility room.
I will paint the walls with a sealant just in case, and cover them with tongue and groove wood. That way, I can easily install loads of sockets, and then paint the walls with waterproof paint, not needing a splashback.
The plumber tells me🤞that he is coming this week, to install the sink and washing machine drainage, meeting up with an outside drain. There is already a cold water feed into the room.
I will repaint the concrete floor for the time being. By the time all the cupboards are in, it will be quite a small space, so I could then get some really snazzy tiles down, which won't break the bank.
For this job, I am employing the plumber for a day, which will also include rerouting a mess of pipes coming down from the bathroom above and sprawling annoyingly all over the wall. They will end up more tidily on the outside wall. Pipes and fittings will be supplied by him. I bought a cream coloured double sink a while back for this room, with taps. All the washing machine fittings are already in place, just need moving.
Then I am employing a joiner to do the tongue and groove walls and also make cupboard carcasses, all wood supplied by him, for the deep green doors that I bought for £50 off eBay, hang them all, install countertops (recycled cream ones from the conservatory) and do any caulking, etc. Probably three days work for him.
An electrician for another day, to install brass sockets and switches that I bought second hand, all wiring, boxes, etc to be supplied by him.
The painting I will do myself. And I got a load of brass knobs from Freecycle a while back, so will replace all the wooden knobs on the cupboards.
I haven't yet got a price for the work, just an estimate of the time needed, and costs vary according to area. But I hope it helps to hear my plans..
