Why do I get so annoyed about a toaster?

Where our toaster is you need to unplug it to put the kettle on. Why anytime I have to do this do I get annoyed it's so unreasonable. I never use the toaster but need the kettle for babies bottles. I know this can be solved by getting an extension plug.

It bothers me that I'm getting so annoyed with it.

😄 that would annoy me too, but I dont know why

Kiddlywinkss · 23/08/2025 23:10

I had this same problem and it was really annoying!! Got a block extension and now I smile inside every time I need to use the kettle and/or toaster without having to unplug one or the other :)

Wow glad I'm not alone. I know I need an extension but I just keep getting distracted when trying to buy one.

Thank you. Yous have made me think I'm a little less mental.

Read up about adaptor/extension fire risk to help you decide the safest type to get.

Kpo58 · 23/08/2025 23:36

It probably annoys you as if you are making toast, it's probably breakfast time and so you want a tea/coffee to go with it and you currently cannot do both at the same time.

OhNoNotSusan · 23/08/2025 23:37

order an extension now op @Dairymilkisminging

Dairymilkisminging · 24/08/2025 00:19

Bless yous. Ordering now. Husband is a firefighter so he's wary about extensions ect. I wonder if he gets so annoyed with it too? With the kettle being plugged in

I thought I was going to read about Dualit toaters. About how you have to select how many slots you want to heat up, it has 4. Or the bagel setting which only toasts on one side. I hate, hate, hate the damn thing. DH had one when he was single, I put up with half done toast for years until one day, when the DC were toddlers, I couldn’t take it anymore and the toaster was launched up the garden. For years we had a regular pop up toaster and my mornings were peaceful once again. However, DC are older now and decided that DH would love his bachelor days toaster for a recent big birthday. The damn Dualit is back. DC picked up the wrong colour - it has found additional way to mock my mornings.

We have a basic 20 quid toaster. No fancy dials and buttons, it just makes toast, it’s brilliant.

The kettle though is bonkers. Wifi kettle that you can control through an app an your phone to set the temperature and boil it, set it to boil at certain times. Well, it hasn’t half changed our lives, you can boil our kettle from anywhere in the world.

It is a cool looking kettle though.

Hahaha nope just a slandered four slice beast. I don't eat toast so it's a useless thing to me. Only husband and dd eats it. Takes up space on the counter top too. I dream of an appliance garage when we finally redo the kitchen.

I hate my dualit, it’s been faulty since day one. You have to hold the knob down or it won’t work. Or jam a clothes peg in the slider hole to keep the knob down. £80 heap of shit which I really should send back but have had it six months now. I burn so much toast as don’t realise it’s done.

Call and electrician and get a double socket? If you are not diy type. Problem solved.

An appliance garage, sounds perfect. Ours is the top of the fridge freezer. We’ve acquired an air fryer as the eldest is now back from Uni (weird contraption), so it’s full up on the fridge freezer now.

We have an alcohol garage, but business always seems poor, it never has many customers waiting.

Dairymilkisminging · 24/08/2025 09:34

We have so many gadgets. Kitchen is husbands domain. We've got the air fryer, coffee maker, velvitiser, two kettles (one is babies) the microwave and the blasted toaster 🙄

I dream of clear counter tops

You could get your single plug socket made into a double plug socket. Not sure if would work if the socket is embedded in tiles, but for one that just sits on the surface of the wall its an easy job. It does leave you with a sticking out socket, but might be worth it. My DH has done this in multiple locations in our house, but when we had our kitchen redone we made sure to have loads of plug sockets! We have an interrupted (apart from the hob) run of work surface of over 5 metres. We have 5 double sockets all along that length.

BertieBotts · 24/08/2025 10:06

Extension leads are a bit dodgy in a kitchen due to trailing wires and the presence of liquids, but you can always screw it to the bottom of the upper cupboard, which stops it moving around and makes spills unlikely. Get as short an extension as you can find, 50cm or 1m, and buy it from a reputable place like B&Q - avoid dodgy amazon products, or if you must, stick with a named brand. That might meet hubby's fire safety requirements? I have a vague feeling you shouldn't use those wall-wart types as well (the ones which are like a cube that sticks out of the socket) because the wiring is too close together so they can more easily overheat, especially if cheaply made or old.

Kettle and toaster are some of the highest draws in a kitchen, so you might want to avoid actually using them at the same time, but it would annoy me too to have to physically keep switching plugs over.

The other thing though - having a separate kettle for the baby's formula seems a bit overkill to me but if you feel it is necessary, at least that is temporary. Once that kettle has served it's purpose, will you go back to having one? That will solve the issue won't it? I wonder if it would make sense to put the baby's kettle somewhere else too.

intrepidpanda · 24/08/2025 10:10

YANBU. Toast is way superior in a grill. Bin the toaster.

shellyleppard · 24/08/2025 10:10

My teenage son always always unplugs the washing machine to put the sandwich toaster on... plenty of other plug sockets available 😳😁

Dairymilkisminging · 24/08/2025 10:37

Babies kettle heat to whatever temperature you set it to so you don't have to boil then wait 20 mins. When baby is bigger will go back to one kettle. Its a tiled wall so think an extension is the best bet. Hoping to get kitchen done in around 3 years and I so cannot wait. Not that I do any of the cooking. I legit use the kitchen to make coffee and baby bottles 🤣
