Bolt in tyre AGAIN! :-(

Could cry.
Just seen this on my rear tyre which was only just fitted last week.
Second tyre in two months damaged from roadworks shrapnel(?).
Drove over Woodhead Pass yesterday. I know they've been doing works for some time now.
I feel cursed.
Was due to go away tomorrow.
Have just made an online appointment for Kwikfit to look at it in the morning but does not mean they can necessarily do anything according to the same site (said tyre replacements would be Wed to Fri).
Do Kwikfit not have lots of cheap tyres on site then for emergencies?
The car is small so no spare tyre. I am with Green Flag for home start but don't know what they could do if whole tyre needs replacing.
Any ideas?

Bah. Photo needs checking first. It shows some kind of nail/screw/bolt.
Am I just bloody unlucky?
I do not drive fast.
Is it my position on the road?
Is it happening more these days or am I jinxed?
Also both times spotted, I was coming out the same shop. Coincidence no doubt but it is starting to feel personal!!

They can repair certain types of puncture so it might not need replacing.

My husband had one of these bolt type screws in his car tyre the other week! He took it to a local independent tyre place and they were able to remove and just repair the puncture. No replacement tyre needed 😀

It is in a similar placement to last time and looks big. I can but hope.
In the meantime, do I try and book a hire car or not? Prices will go up tomorrow no doubt but two ND kids are expecting to go away and air BnB is booked.

Ah, that's incredibly frustrating! It's not anything you're doing wrong (unless you always drive freakishly close to the pavement or something), it's just bad luck - and shoddy workmen not picking up their bits and pieces.
Every single time DH or I go to the local dump we end up with a screw in a type, which gives us the rage!

MalteserGeezee · 23/08/2025 19:28

We've had a SPATE of this over the last two years, always at the worst possible time. I'm guessing it's because there's no road sweeping anymore, especially on faster routes likely to have more construction-type traffic rattling through. Although also lots of roadworks locally too... As others have said, some can be repaired (with a lifetime guarantee repair, not some crap temporary job) which is £30 Vs new tyre prices

If you have a Wilco Fastfit nearby I have never had to wait for tyres to come in there.

Might get lucky then but depends on Kwikfit. Noone else open and it is a bank holiday weekend. Sod's law. Do not know if Green Flag would come out or if they removed it and could not fix or patch, what I'd do then. I do have it that they take it to a local garage but apart from Kwikfit, nobody open :-(

It's too close to the edge to be repaired, they can only repair the middle 3/4 of the tyre. It socks sorry. Hopefully kwik fit can sort you out.

I got a puncture in a 6 week old tyre but thankfully was a small screw in the repairable area.

megacat · 23/08/2025 19:44

That won’t be repairable. It’s on the edge and the circle of the repair mushroom must be able to lie flat. Some tyre manufacturers will replace a tyre foc if there is an unrepairable puncture within a short time frame of being fitted, it is worth asking but Kwik fit are pretty shit so probably not.

KeepCalmAndCarryOnScrolling · 23/08/2025 19:56

Thanks, that is what I thought when I saw it.
It was not an expensive tyre but it was done at a garage 4 miles away, which will not be open until Tues and we won't be here.
I will see what Kwikfit say and do. They are 2 miles away. Hopefully, it is driveable there and they either keep it for the week or I go away and sort it when I'm back. Just don't need it on top of everything else. Three of the four had a Halford's guarantee. That was the outlier. Local mechanic replaced. Has only been on the car for ten days Sad. Had that not been the case, I'd have been more pragmatic as it needed replacing anyway but this, this feels rough.

If you’re prepared to leave it with kwik fit while you’re away I’d be more inclined to sort it with the local mechanic who fitted it when you’re back.
They won’t want it taking up a space for that length of time and may charge you storage. Google the brand see if they offer any guarantee.
