Anyone know what this box in our holiday home is, and can I safely turn it off

We're staying in a lovely holiday cottage in Wales, surrounded by farm land. In the living room, this box is plugged into a socket behind an arm chair. It constantly clicks as the lights flash on and off, which sounds almost like a crackling fire. Unfortunately, it also makes an intermittent high pitched noise. On one side, there are two switches - one for pitch and one for frequency. They are both set in the middle of their range.
What is it? And more importantly, can I switch it off while we're here without causing any problems.

Could it be an electronic rodent deterrent? Switch it off if so. They don't work anyway.

I agree with other poster it is a rodent deterrent. Just turn it off if it annoys you

That sounds likely. We haven't seen any rodents to be fair, but I could probably put up with a few rather than listen to the noise.

It's a motion detector

Is it a carbon monoxide detector

The Internet says...

Possible Mode Meanings

  • C.U.E – Continuous Ultrasonic Emission: A steady ultrasonic output to irritate pests like mice and spiders.
  • R.U.E – Random Ultrasonic Emission: Varies the frequency and timing to prevent pests from adapting.
  • E.M.I – Electromagnetic Interference: Sends pulses through wiring to disrupt nesting and movement patterns of rodents and insects inside walls.

These modes are common in multi-function repellers like the Pest-Stop Plug-In Electronic Repeller, which uses both ultrasonic and electromagnetic waves and has indicator lights to show which mode is active.

It’s not you who has to sort the rodents out though is it when you go home (if that’s what it is)

Behind an arm chair?

It looks like the noisy part of a doorbell to me. Try pressing your doorbell and see if it makes a noise. If not, it's probably the rodent deterrent other people have mentioned, in which case your call as to whether you want to risk turning it off.

Thank you all - I think a pest / rodent deterrent is likely to be the answer. I will switch it off ONLY when we're using the living room this evening, and put it back on before we go to bed. Hopefully there won't be an influx of rodents in those few hours.
