The sport of kings: Mornington Crescent

Good morning, all. What better way to begin the long weekend than a new game of the ineffable Mornington Crescent? All are welcome - veterans and newbies alike.

To set the tone, I will start with one of my favourite moves - a double shunt to

Kew Gardens

I heard, LlynTegid, that that very gifted player quit after some sort of skirmish elsewhere in these hallowed halls although, as you say, they are perhaps still here incognito.

Welcome back, HazelBite!

Queens Road Peckham

Southfields, seeing as we've not had a perpendicular tocsin yet.

I haven't seen a perpendicular tocsin since 2019! Pre COVID. Splendid and a little bit of a challenge.

I think, tentatively, a Riga Evensong Reverse would be allowed? To Stratford?* *

Baital · 02/10/2025 16:49

Oh! Cross posted!

But i think Stratford would still be allowed under the 2006 amendment?

TragicMuse · 02/10/2025 17:10

2006, yes, most definitely.

I fancy that opens the gates westward. In which case…

Edgware

willitdoit · 02/10/2025 17:35

If I may be so bold, Rainham double shunt to Goodge Street

Baital · 02/10/2025 17:59

I didn't spot that response! Very well played. I am certainly learning from the best.

I think, with the reverse-oblast rule enabled, I could move to ChanceryLane?

CaveMum · 02/10/2025 18:29

Apologies for the prolonged absence - a rather unfortunate incident involving a feather duster, though nothing like as bad as the one involving the Bishop of Rochester in ‘94. Least said, etc.

Very interesting play of late I see, some new moves I’ve not seen before. I shall fall back on an old faithful and in the spirit of Todd Sloane slip up the running rail to Tufnell Park

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/10/2025 18:32

Gosh! This is becoming spectacularly frisky but I guess it’s true, as the pundits now say, that Thursday is the new Friday, with all that that entails. Are you ready? Prepare yourselves:

West Ruislip

OP posts:
Baital · 02/10/2025 19:07

Ooooh! West Ruislip! I need to work that move through - did you use the Toddington Square? Or perhaps the Charlbury Eight?

Either would let me go to Chorleywood

LlynTegid · 02/10/2025 19:32

@Baital that is a very interesting use of the walking interchange rule assuming you used it.

A move to Pinner seems quite drab by comparison.

Well spotted!

I have been going through my DMs game play books and came across several moves that have fallen out of fashion.

The Archduke Franz Ferdinand, for example, was an advocate for the game before the sad events in Sarajevo. His Standing Longsrafd was masterly, and I use it for the first time since 1913 (I believe?) to move to Harlesden

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/10/2025 21:12

You might think that, Baital, but I couldn’t possibly comment. I could, though, offer you a Winterbottom’s Orbital to

Arsenal

OP posts:
TragicMuse · 02/10/2025 22:50

Winterbottom’s eh, Maud? Stunning. Absolutely. Reminds me of Gstaad in ‘67. The Baron was a fine player. Fond of a Winterbottom’s…

Blackhorse Road

One does admire neat hocks and withers in a filly, what what…

VegimalCrudite · 03/10/2025 07:57

Morning

I have been cogitating on my next move for awhile, thank you for the wonderful set up of an Aimsworths 18 Tragic and Muse. I’ve not been able to use that since Bollington! The fires that year, I scorched my chemise.

Neasden

LittleBitofBread · 03/10/2025 08:59

This is high-voltage play indeed. Gstaad would welcome us all back well possibly not the undersecretary

I'm going for a Kolyvanov, plain and simple, to Becontree

LlynTegid · 03/10/2025 11:05

The east end of the District line always seems a safer bet that that of the Central line, even after the through trains to Southend were withdrawn (not sure when, saw it detailed on an old Underground map).

So Hornchurch seems a safe bet as the next move.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 03/10/2025 19:36

I would trust neither the Baron nor the under secretary in this situation (or many others, for that matter - especially if tambourines or grapefruit were involved). Let us proceed to the sanctity and serenity of

Elephant and Castle

OP posts:
HazelBite · 04/10/2025 05:11

High velocity indeed!
Let's bring things down a notch and go for a little bit of serenity to Temple

LlynTegid · 04/10/2025 08:01

Time to play the closed station and walking interchange rules in one move.

Aldwych

TragicMuse · 04/10/2025 12:09

Oh, well, if we’re playing walking interchanges…

Euston Square (Hammersmith and City line)

PunksVersusBrats · 05/10/2025 09:59

I've been off grid for a while (can't say anymore) and missed the thrilling conclusion to the last game.

Attempting to get back into the swing of things with a no-nonsense Robinson to
Chancery Lane.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/10/2025 11:07

Welcome back, PunksVersusBrats. That Robinson was certainly worth the wait! I shall continue with a longitudinal slip to

Shoreditch High Street

OP posts:
VegimalCrudite · 05/10/2025 11:12

You escaped Punks! Feisty. How did you get away from the parrots?

An easy like Sunday morning Round Robinson back to

Neasden

I claim my mollusc

PunksVersusBrats · 05/10/2025 12:12

Thanks @VegimalCrudite, I suppose one never fully forgets one's training.

Side-stepping to Kensal Rise.
