Retail Abuse

Retail Abuse of staff is getting worse and worse.

Every day colleagues are shouted at, sworn at, threatened, filmed with cameras and even spat at (because a colleague couldn't offer a gentleman a table.. there were none available)

Today I was accused of something extremely serious because a customer was not happy about how their transaction went.

They had neglected to scan part of several items (key items that flag on the system because they are chronically underscanned) and I had to show them that these particular components also needed to be scanned, which they disagreed vehemently with.

This led to them requesting that the part scanned items be removed from their bill as they no longer wanted them because of the additional cost.

Unfortunately for them removing items from the bill triggers an automatic spot check meaning I then have to rescan however many items the system prompts me to scan in order for the customer to proceed with the transaction.

Completely automated and not under my control in any way.

Again the customer was not pleased, and at this point accused me of something extremely serious 3 times. I did explain that the spot check was not at my behest, but at that of pre programmed software, but this was ignored, and again I was accused.

The spot check now done I left the customer to complete the transaction, which they did, and they left the store commenting loudly to anyone who would listen that I was "......". Fill in the blank yourself.

A hugely confidence damaging episode for me, and very distressing to be accused of something untrue merely for doing my job. To be honest I had to take 5 minutes and have a cry before getting back to work.

For the record I try very hard to be kind, polite and courteous when I serve people, something that's often acknowledged by my bosses and peers, but if I get it wrong I'm honest and I hold my hand up and admit it.

But that wasn't the case today. Hugely damaging words were very lightly thrown at me, and they have had what I believe is the desired impact on me.

I understand people are under a lot of pressure in their everyday life (me too!), but that never gives you the right to be abusive to staff. Please think about what you are doing and treat them as you would wish to be treated yourself.

If you recieve bad service by all means address that, that needs to be addressed and sorted.

But you should never be behaving in a way that makes a member of staff cry ( and believe me we have all cried at some point). You wouldn't want to be treated like that yourself, so don't do it to us. We are peoples too.

At that point, you should have wheeled their trolley away and told them that there is zero tolerance for abuse and they need to leave. Call security if you have them and ask them to escort the customer out.

People treat retail staff disgracefully and shouldn't get away with it.

Sounds awful OP.

I worked in retail for about 20 years and I'm so glad I no longer do.

However, I'm also often shocked at the way a lot of MNetters talk about retail staff if they dare to make conversation about what they're buying, or if they ask (apparently it's always 'demand') to see their receipt, or do anything other than silently keep their heads down whilst serving.

So many posters looking down on shop staff sadly.

The customer in the first post should have been banned.

I worked in retail as a student and it was bad then but can imagine it’s a lot worse now. Sadly it happens everywhere. Schools, doctors, bus drivers etc- all facing abuse from entitled rude people. You have my sympathies op.

I occasionally work in a fitting room and get asked for my opinion by customers. Most are lovely, but if you point out (valid reasons) that they need to try a size up you can get serious abuse. My go to is ‘are you comfortable’ as well as checking fit on a person. I understand it’s embarrassing to need a bigger size, I’m friendly and want to see people happy with a purchase. Being rude to me because a dress is too tight isn’t acceptable.

Unfortunately we DO have to ask customers questions, and sometimes ask for their receipts too. Not because we want to "annoy" them, but because it's an essential part of our job. It's never personal, but sadly a lot of people take it very personally. I'm so grateful for the kind ones. I don't think I could stand it without them and the occasional glimmer of hope in humanity they provide.

Its only going to get worse too..as life gets worse for everyone we will be fired upon without mercy more often because we are easy targets. I do wonder how any of us will survive it.

I’m sorry op. I’m always polite to staff in any hospitality or retail role and it’s sad that people are so rude and entitled. No need for such behavior.

Thank you all for your replies. Restored my hope a bit 💐

Years ago I worked for the DHSS (now DWP). I had to inform a claimant that he wasn't eligible for a loan as he hadn't finished paying the one he previously had.

He threatened to kill me and as he had a reputation for violence my manager took me home and he was standing at the end of the road obviously waiting.
