Satinwood advice for a novice please!

Our house is looking quite neglected (becuase it is!).

My kids are older now and I want to repaint everything. We can't get painters in so need all the advice we can get! Basic end terrace ex housing authority so nothing fancy. But want to do a good job in case we don't do anything again for a good while...

Woodwork (skirting, windowsdoors and banister)

I've been scanning threads. I think it's mostly satinwood most places currently and gloss windowsills (more durable??)

Is gloss better for windowsills? I prefer the look of the satinwood.

We think we're using trade brilliant white on ceilings (based purely on googling)

For skirting do we do...

  • Sand
  • zinser primer one coat
  • satinwood 2 coats

? Or is it different if its just over what was theee before although I've no idea about oil and water based satinwood.

Also do I want

Trade diamond satinwood

From googling?

And finally.... Can I do the same routine for he windowsills or should they be gloss to deal with spills and things?

Please help me! The paints all so expensive so I don't want to get it wrong.

Firstly I wouldn’t use pure brilliant white, I would you just white - Dulux Trade (only use trade paint).

Secondly have a look at this forum it’s pretty good and honest: https://www.thedecoratorsforum.com/water-based-satinwood-comparison-guide/

I never use gloss - modern satin iseasily tough enough, and much easier to work with. I also only use water-based. Finally, I agree to avoid brilliant white - it has a bluish tone - plain white is fine, or be fancy and do them the same colour as your walls.

So that thread suggests Johnson aqua guard (default is brilliant white) for painting all the woodwork.

And presumably the zinser primer underneath?

So 1 x primer
2 x Johnson aqua?

On everything?

And dulux trade white for ceilings?
