My son used to faint when he was sick (as in vomiting) The first time it happened he was sitting down at school. He told me he went blind and was then sick. He fainted onto the table, so the teacher didn't actually notice till he vomited. It happened a few times at home. I had to be close to him whenever he felt nauseous (he once fainted on the stairs, luckily I was there to catch him)

He seems to have grown out of it now, the last couple of times he was sick there was no fainting, although I still keep an eye on him (despite him being a great big teen)

I hope your son is OK

Migraine. It's happened to me.

trainedopossum · 22/08/2025 20:30

On another recent thread where appendicitis was discussed, I and others didn’t have pain as the main symptom. My appendix was perforated and I had some abdominal discomfort but the main symptoms were fever, nausea, general unwellness.

Sorry this is no help with the loss of vision but I wanted to say you can have acute appendicitis and not be climbing the walls in pain.

Good luck, hope they sort it out and he feels better soon.

I have low blood pressure. I lose vision after strenuous exercise and when ill. I’m healthy and fit

Migraine. I was about the same age when I had my first one. I thought i was going blind.

Exactly the same for me

Are you sure the doctor is a doctor and not a physician's associate? Might explain deferring to the nurse? It's not always made clear.

BananaPie · 22/08/2025 21:12

could be related to the vagus nerve which links to the digestive system - have a google of vagus nerve and vision problems.

i’ve experienced tunnel vision where most of my vision is lost for a very short time due to a stomach bug

Yes i’ll go soon, i just wondering anyone had experienced this before and could advise me

Sounds like he was on the verge of passing out from the pain.

Have they checked his testicles for torsion as this low down severe pain sounds exactly like that.

fuzzt · 22/08/2025 21:20

Low blood pressure or iron

Harassedmum123 · 22/08/2025 21:29

Happens to me every time I’m sick and has done since I was a child. I lose vision and everything goes black every single time. I hate it, it’s as bad if not worse than being sick . Then the claminness.

taxidriver · 22/08/2025 21:39

the nurse could well have had more experience

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/08/2025 21:49

Epilepsy? my uncle had seizures that involved a few moments of blackout.

FudgeSweet · 22/08/2025 22:01

This happened to me first in my late teens/early 20's.

The first time it was my first ever migraine (no headache). I still get the occasional migraine with the aura and always need to sleep it off.

The second time, I blanked out and woke up when my head hit the ground and promptly threw up. They never found anything wrong and it never happened again.

Just to add, please make sure they examine his testicles / exclude a testicular torsion. Very likely this has already been done but can sometimes present with lower abdo pain in boys.
Good luck xx

I wonder if your child suffered a vasovagal syncope (faint).

I had that happen to me and didn't know what it was. It sounds very similar, down to the clamminess, nausea and vomiting. My DH had one a few years ago too, and lost his vision while it came on, which was terrifying. But we are both fine now and haven't experienced it since.

(Yes, we are a right pair!)

Also seconding the migraine suggestion- it's very possible. A lot of people underestimate how much migraines aren't just an achey head- they can cause other horrible symptoms throughout the rest of your body too.

You are taking good care of your son OP- I have everything crossed for you that this is a one off and your boy will be feeling well again very soon.xxx

Best place for medical advice is mumsnet. Then google of course. No need for the medical profession any more, thank goodness. ☹️☹️

@BreatheAndFocusive just had that stomach bug, fainted first (and managed to bash my face in the process) then developed really severe D&V. It was nearly a week ago and I still feel pretty washed out.
