Fare dodgers

Pretty much every time I'm on the underground now and use the wide gate with my children I have an adult slip in through with me! It's so often that I now try to check behind me to make sure there is no one around but they seem so quick and appear out of nowhere! The staff don't say anything I guess they don't want to be attacked but it's very annoying and id hate for them to think I'm letting these people in and I'm with them. Does this happen to anyone else? Seems to be a bit of a free for all now

Often but I’m wise to it and deliberately take my sweet time, or I turn and embarrass them by loudly saying ‘DON’T YOU DARE TAILGATE ME’.

It’s usually teenage boys travelling on their own and think a woman with a pushchair or holding the hand of a small child is an easy target, cheeky fuckers.

Never teens here always grown men or women. I try to check behind but they often still manage to get through 😩

It's definitely worse than it used to be, they're so blatant. It's because most staff have been instructed not to challenge them due to safety concerns. You also see people just forcing the wide gates open - some are quite weak now because of this (looking at you, Vauxhall!).

I try and keep and eye out for loiterers so they don't follow me through. I have also been known to stop half way through the gates, turn to them, "apologise" for my dithering and say "but you go on past me with your ticket" 😁

Are they ‘dodgy’ types? Only asking as the men and woman (mostly men) who board the tube or train to beg will do this, and they are quick.

The guy yesterday definitely looked dodgy so wouldn't have wanted to say anything to him. The station was down a hill and the barriers round the corner so I didn't see him until he slipped in behind us, I have altered station staff in the past that I am not with them (even though they'd have to pay anyway) but they've just shrugged so I don't bother now.

Yep all the time and I hate it. I understand times are tight, but they make the prices higher for the rest of us.

LlynTegid · 21/08/2025 15:11

I think it's worse because of Robert Jenrick's stunt, which was just him having a pop at Sadiq Khan. No intent of actually doing anything or proposing anything to reduce it.

It's not just the Underground. It's now on all forms of public transport. Some people just do not want to pay for anything. The staff just wave them on because some people are extremely violent and they know that the police will not arrive in time to deal with their poor behaviours.

Faredodgers · 21/08/2025 15:21

I have to admit my experience of the bus is better the drives do usually call them back or refuse to move the bus until they've got off. Even one driver followed the person upstairs and told them to get off, but that's just my experience.

And I hate that on the underground they use me and my children to sneak through which doesn't happen on the bus
