Recommendations for decent vegetarian (NOT VEGAN) cheese

Vegan cheese is not cheese!

DS1 (34) reacts badly to cheese. He is fine with all other dairy products so we know its not a lactose issue. We are working through various things to see if we can work out what the issue is as seeing a GP at the moment is almost impossible and from what I understand he would be told to restrict his diet to see what the issue is. We have isolated cheddar as the issue, he doesnt like any other cheese, so we are going to try veggie cheese, with non animal rennet to see if that is the problem.

Trouble is all the cheeses we can find that dont cost are fortune and are available in supermarkets are those vegan "cheeses" and thats not what we want.

Any suggestions?! Perhaps I am using the wrong search terms?

OP is asking a question on an internet forum, seeking information. Not wet nursing him into adulthood

I often ask questions on here that are actually about other friends or my parents or sibling, not necessarily for me personally

What is strange about that

Big difference between 18 and 34 though?🙄

It never fails to sadden me that normal close family relationships where the adults continue to care about each other well into adulthood/dotage appear to have eluded so many….

Could it be a reaction to histamine - how is he with mozzarella, cream cheese etc?

I was going to say the same thing.

To be fair OP you havent said what the symptoms are.

What is the definition of reacts badly?

Sneezing, coughing, choking, sick, upset tum, rashes, reflux?

I only added his age to show that this isnt a childhood reaction.

I am not sure why you care so much about why I am helping him.

If your adult child came to you asking for help with something that you could easily help with, I assume you would say "No, you are 34, sort it out for yourself" then?

As it is, I am helping for reasons that are none of your business but very valid.

God forbid that an adult asks another adult for advice. I mean, it never happens on mumsnet does it?

Ignore the stupid comments @PyongyangKipperbang

Most supermarket own brand cheeses are made with vegetarian rennet, but it is wise to always check the packet. It will say suitable for vegetarians. Tesco do a lovely vegetarian Pecorino, which I use instead of Parmesan.

@Sidebeforeself do you never ask another adult for advice? Ever?

Thanks again, had no idea about the histamine issue, so will do a bit of digging there.

And I truly do not believe that if you @Sidebeforeself had that conversation with your adult child you would say "Well I am not googling it for you, see the doctor." and if you would then I am sorry for your child

Hes 34? Why are you getting involved?

Why can't she enquire as his mother? Nothing wrong with it.

Does he react differently if it’s “normal” or if it’s melted at all? I know someone who can’t have melted cheese but unmelted is fine.

And I know you said you didn’t want vegan cheese but a friend of mine who is both dairy and lactose intolerant actually really likes a lot of the plant based stuff from M&S, they’re not as expensive as other vegan cheeses and melt nicely too. Apparently the plant based cheese twists are amazing too and they’re the same price as the “normal” cheese twists.
