What have your kids learnt this summer?

This is not a boasting thread but an alternative view to the “summer slide” that we keep getting thrown at us.
Hopefully, all kids have had time to relax and have some fun but as far as learning goes, my dc learnt
lots of animal facts
importance of fire to some ecosystems (knowledge for me too!)
foreign currency rates
Value of water to wildlife and around the world and how to help.
How a court case works.

I’m sure they absorbed lots more too that I’d be unaware of, especially in the reading that they were also doing.

Probably never to buy a shitpit of a house to renovate. We are ripping the place apart in September, so they have spent an extraordinary amount of time in B&Q.

Every song from k pop demon hunters

In seriousness they've all tried new foods (ie. Something other than pizza or chicken nuggets) and learned quite a bit about bugs

TheLostStargazer · 20/08/2025 15:39

Oh we can add YouTube and all the songs from k pop demon hunters to the list too!
Sorry @Louiestopitit sounds stressful.

A lot of general knowledge, they’re playing the game where if you get a question wrong you get pushed into the pool

Carding wool
Poisonous and non poisonous plants in the park
How to make pastry

I’ve been working through SATS companion with my ten year old. My teen had been getting ChatGPT to set them year 8 maths questions and then if they got any wrong explain the process and set three further questions. I thought that was really clever! We’ve also done the local library summer reading challenge, visited a castle and cathedral and learned (or relearned) about the Magna Carta and my youngest spent a week swimming in the holiday pool and is now more confident in water.

OopsNoHoliday · 20/08/2025 16:11

My ds (6) has learned how about earthquakes and volcanoes.

He has learned how to cycle blue mountain bike tracks without injuring himself

He has learned that when you have watched all 9 Star Wars films, you just want to start at the beginning and watch them all again.

He hasn’t learned much else but he has had some fun and plenty of downtime.

TeenToTwenties · 20/08/2025 16:14

How scary it is starting to learn to drive.

Samanabanana · 20/08/2025 16:16

Every word of K-pop demon hunters, how to make sushi, and (eldest DC) how to tie his laces - super proud of the last one, it's taken him ages to get and he continued to try until he finally got it

GRCP · 20/08/2025 16:16

All the words to all the songs from KPop Demon Hunters

indoorplantqueen · 20/08/2025 16:16

To make an omelette and banana bread.

ZenNudist · 20/08/2025 16:17

Not to go down a hill on a Boris bike with hour friend on the back. With no helmet on.

Last year my youngest learned why we zip the trampoline.

I have learned to book 9 nights not 10 or more because the longer the holiday the worse it gets.

Weekmindedfool · 20/08/2025 16:19

They’ve learned how to keep quiet and entertain themselves while mummy is on meetings and calls.

Mine will definitely have also learned this, though the renovations of our elderly money pit restarted a couple of months ago, after a hiatus for a couple of years.

He has also learned to sail in a basic way, sea-kayaking, SU paddle boarding, windsurfing, how to cook a few basic meals, and golf.

How to make toasties in the air fryer
they’ve been given 30 minutes of cgp books a day to do so they’ve definitely kept their brains active
how to get a battle royale or something in Fortnite
how to keep a paddling pool from going green
one has read a lot of Sherlock Holmes and some classics, the other several chapter books we’ve had for ages and he’s not picked up
we also spent a whole evening in the garden in camping chairs watching meteor shower and learning about that.

How if they climb on a chair and stand on the kitchen surfaces, they can reach the snack box where the "good" stuff is kept.

Getting down is more difficult than getting up. A useful rule to remember when climbing anything.

TheLudditesWereRight · 20/08/2025 16:55

Some Spanish words and that they really like kayaking

ExcellentDesign · 20/08/2025 16:55

Oldest - how to reverse park, negotiate using huge multi lane roundabouts and pass a driving test in a notoriously tricky town. Lots about gardening. How to use LinkedIn. First aid course for work.

Youngest - lots about going to uni, student finance, disabled students allowance etc. How to get to her uni by public transport. Pensions - her part time job offered to enrol her.
