How can I wash a dry clean only suit at home?

Wedding to go to on saturday. OH has dug out his suit (all screwed up at the bottom of the airing cupboard - don't ask) and is now panicking.

I can't find a dry cleaner locally who can do it in time - is there anything I can do at home?

According to the label its 80% wool if that helps at all 🤦‍♀️

Airing it will be the best you can do. Dont even try to wash it!!!

Dabberlocks · 20/08/2025 13:29

I wouldn't do it in the washing machine.

Maybe try hanging it in a steamy room (like the bathroom with a hot shower running) for a while, and that will help the creases to drop out a bit. Then it can be pressed gently while still slightly damp, but use a tea towel so the iron doesn't make shiny marks on the fabric. If it smells, then hang either outside or by an open window for a couple of days, then spray with Febreze.

Alternatively, he could go to M&S and buy a new suit.

Incidentally... why is this your problem to solve, and not his?

Get a hand steamer? I definitely would not put it in the washing machine, it could damage the structure.

Does it not just need an iron or steam? Hang it in the bathroom when you shower for a couple of days, stick on a sunny line to air, then gently hold the iron up to it whilst it’s hanging and press the steam function button repeatedly as you move the iron up and down. If that doesn’t work gentle iron on the lowest setting.
Don’t attempt to clean it or you’ll be forking out for a new suit. I’ve ruined a couple of things thinking ‘it will be fine on a gentle wool cycle’ but, if it says dry clean only, it’s for a reason!

Send him a link to a garment steamer on Amazon to arrive tomorrow.

Firstly, this is actually his problem and not yours.
That aside, I definitely wouldn't wash it as that might not turn out too well!
Airing it might help, but if you had a hand held steamer you could use that (or leave it in the bathroom while folk shower and let the steam there do it's magic). Definitely air again after steaming though, to make sure it's not damp and acquiring wet dog smell.

Soak in shampoo and water in the bath tub, for few hours, ring it without twisting, dry it out and then iron with steam

Don't wash it! try steaming or hanging in a steamy bathroom.

Have a look at Laundrapp, depending on where you are they can sometimes do it overnight. Also if you have a major train station, see if there's one nearby, they often are quicker for commuters!

Thank you so much guys - crisis averted, I've found a dry cleaners who after explaining and pleading, have agreed to have it done for friday afternoon 😍

For everyone saying its his problem, I totally agree - however he works 12 hour days, its just not possible for him to sort when I work from home and can easily pop out. He does know I've saved his ass and is very grateful 🙏

Not an answer to your question but:

I don’t think it’s a “his” problem. It’s a joint problem to solve. when there is a partner involved it’s always a joint issue. His clothes and my clothes. Always a classic Mumsnet response - his problem. End of it.

Also why can’t some people just answer the question instead of telling OP about what OP ‘s partner should do.
