A massive house spider crawled on me last night in bed!

DH was sleeping in the lounge as the baby keeps waking up. I laid there trying to nod off, pitch black, then I feel this tickle on my arm.. I panicked, sat up and it flew in my face. Then I shook my head and flung my arms about shrieking before turning the light on. I searched the bed for a couple of minutes, no sign, looked under the pillows, then I notice it on the side of the bed frame, fucking massive it was. I am sooooooo freaked out by this! Anyone else had similar?
how do I stop this happening again!?

Oh god you poor thing! I use conkers and peppermint spray…at this time of the year my fear of them 100% controls my life. I am constantly on edge, it makes me physically ill ☹️

My cellar spider had about a thousand babies this week. As much as my heart says 'move them' my brain says 'think of all the big ones they will eat'.

I swear Shelob is residing in my lounge though at the moment. I may have to relocate mummy cellar spider.

if you don't have pets, peppermint spray keeps them away (and smells nice)

Cellar spiders do eat house spiders - I know because I once saw a dead giant house spider in a cellar spider’s web!

However, I have to wonder how many they actually manage to catch, given that cellar spiders typically live on the ceiling, while house spiders tend to run across the floor.

Fortunately my cats are very efficient spider hunters. It makes the £££ that I spend on cat food worth every penny!

Ahhh don’t!😩🙈 I was half asleep the other night and felt one drop on my face! I jumped around a foot off the bed whilst thrashing about hysterically. I’m not normal afraid of them but stuff like this sends my nerves bad. I always see so many of them around September time x

SweatyAugust · 20/08/2025 22:00

I saw a huge black hairy one in my house this week so it seems to be the time of year. The worst spider experience I had was waking up, opening my eyes and taking a few seconds to realise there was one sat across my eye. Screamed leapt up and beat it to shit.

Ringsofglass · 20/08/2025 22:14

There must be a bumper crop of massive spiders this year. I also spotted the largest spider I've ever seen last night, on my bedroom wall. It must have been 4 inches across, with thick hairy legs. I screamed and made my husband do the card and glass disposal out the window. It'll probably be back soon...

Becs51 · 20/08/2025 22:25

My worst spider experience was the bath! I’d run myself a lovely deep bath and got in and was just laying back relaxing when this huge spider crawled out of the overflow! It was like a tidal wave I evacuated the bath so quickly! Traumatised for life now and always have to block up the overflow before getting in now!

Disturbia81 · 20/08/2025 23:09

They just want a female, not interested in staying on us. I’ve had a few crawl on me but they just use me as a path to get to their destination 🤣

Imisssleep2 · 21/08/2025 06:09

We usually hardly have any of these but had 3 in a week last week and they were the biggest spiders I have ever seen. I am petrified of spiders as in my husband, the best we can do with them is use spider spray and hoover them up, I don't like to kill anything but my fear out weighs this moral.

Some people spray their windows and doors with the spider spray and reckon that helps, anything is worth a try.

My mum ate one once, she woke up in the morning with black bits in her teeth and thought she had had a currant biscuit the night before, before she realised, it haunts her to this day.

Imisssleep2 · 21/08/2025 06:18

It's the males we are seeing at min as they search for a female to mate in the autumn,, so it will end soon but how many you encounter in the mean time is anyone's guess

I know the type...they're wearing DM boots and have a 'I love Mum' tattoo on their bodies. gah...

I had one of those make an appearance on my top when I was sat taking my makeup off one evening a couple of weeks ago; I screamed and ran out onto the landing, jumping and trying to take my top off and all the kids came darting out of their rooms 'what...what?!!?!?!?' I just shouted 'SPIDER'!!!!! They all shrieked and ran off ( useless!) and DH managed to grab it and chuck it out the window. Bastard things.

MakeItToTheMoon · 21/08/2025 09:54

Just reading everyone’s experiences is giving me nightmares! I hate this time of the year.

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 21/08/2025 09:58

@indianrunnerduck that's absolutely awful.
My mantra is where there is one, there will be two.

But that's awful !!

Three 😒 on you and in trousers !!

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 21/08/2025 10:00

Maybe it's the good summer this year , little rain

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 21/08/2025 10:04

@SweatyAugust

Sat across your eye 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

This is the worst spider experience thread ever.

For sweet little spiders who apparntly leave us alone there seems to be a hell of a lot of them ?? Coming into humans space??

This is why false widows should be dispatched because they can cause nasty bites

Mumofyellows · 21/08/2025 10:27

Absolutely hideous OP! I spend this time of year on high alert and check every sink, the bath, stairs, anywhere I have seen them before every morning when I get up. I have two labs, one of which will eat them given the chance so let her have a snoop around every room frequently. My worst ever experience was getting out of the shower and wrapping my towel around me to look down and see a HUGE one on my towel. I also have been trapped in the bath before by one walking across the floor and standing in the middle of the bathroom rendering me unable to leave. It was so huge I swear I could hear its footsteps. I feel for all my fellow spider fearers at the difficult time 😩

katyb84 · 21/08/2025 11:05

I was bathing my dog yesterday , he’s a small cross bread , my daughter passes me his dog towel it has bits to put your hands in to dry , I felt a tickle flicked the towel this enormous spider biggest I’ve ever seen starts running up my dogs leg , the spider was flipping bigger than my dogs foot and my dog is just stood there looking like what is all the fuss about get me out the bath , I flick the spider off him with the towel get him out the bath then me and my daughter are stood back a bit because we can’t see where it went due to the shower curtain , we then see the shower curtain moving on its own and in the blink of a second this massive spider has made it way to the top of the shower curtain and its legs appear over the top of the curtain rail , I politely closed the bathroom door and waited until my husband got in , who then went up to catch it was searching the bath and my oldest daughter starts whaling it’s on the curtain pole watching you . I search my bedroom every night and remove the spiders before bed but this was huge

Klozza · 21/08/2025 11:07

I’ve read that Spiders don’t like Peppermint because the methol distrupts their sensory receptors, so I put some peppermint oil mixed with water in a spray bottle and spray that around the room. Just be careful with it if you have cats as if it’s not very dilute peppermint oil can be harmful for them.

My worst spider story is from two years ago. I’d just gotten out of the shower and wrapped a towel aroung myself, suddenly saw a couple of huge hairy legs crawl from the underside of the towel, I completely lost my mind, threw the towel, and in the process slipped on the tiled floor because I was still wet. I smacked my head on the ceramic sink, and then tried to break the fall with my arm for some reason. Ended up with a broken arm and wrist, which was so bad I needed a permanent metal plate and screws in my arm and it’s left a huge scar on my right arm. I landed on the spider when I fell though so I killed it, so sort of a victory, and it was fucking massive. The doctors kept asking me if I was safe at home because they thought my spider story was too stupid to believe 🙃😂

Tortielady · 21/08/2025 12:06

Big house spiders don't bother me. I'm quite happy to have them about the place, dealing with insect pests. The bigger they are, the better they can handle dangerous prey like wasps. Our house spiders seem to be happiest high up on the wall, which is fine as they are safe from the cats there - it's not fun to come across their poor, chewed up little bodies after the apex predators have finished with them.

I think I might have a different attitude if I saw false widow spiders. They don't look like much, but they have a nasty bite and some people react badly to it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/08/2025 12:46

I've just sprayed Indorex all over my house after reading this thread

Allseeingallknowing · 21/08/2025 16:00

Disturbia81 · 21/08/2025 16:08

I will rent out my plethora of cellar spiders to anyone who wants some, that live quietly in corners looking so sweet, but actually love feasting on house spiders! They are smaller and more delicate but can tackle any beast 🤣 I saw a big house spider on my wall once but I drifted off, woke up and the cellar had killed it, wrapped it up and dropped it on my pillow 😂

RavenT · 21/08/2025 16:09

Two years ago. Was about to drink the remainder of my tea, luckily looked in mug, and saw this. 😱
Already seen 2 whoppers this week indoors. 😬

I’ve had to completely clear out DS’s (10&11) bedroom after they kept seeing them scuttle across the floor.

thought they were all gone, stayed with them both for a bit, low and behold, another one saunters past.

they refused to go back in the room for two days. Cleared it out again, and now they are both sleeping on the top bunk, together.

DinoLil · 21/08/2025 16:34

I remember stripping the sheets off my young DC's bed, lifting up the pillow and there was a massive house spider underneath!
Since then, and we're talking 20yrs, I can't go to sleep anywhere without lifting up all the pillows first.

Top tip that worked for me last year and I'm doing again - keep all windows and doors shut from mid August to end of September. And let a cellar spider live under your radiator because they eat the big ones.

Oh and another story! In my last house, I had a fancy walk in wardrobe. I went to get something off a shelf and it came out with a massive spider on my hand! I screamed, threw it back onto the shelf but then realised I'd have to take every single thing off the shelf until I found the spider again and removed it!

BlakeCarrington · 21/08/2025 17:08

Only solution is to always stay awake. Similar to Freddy Kruger but the villain has more legs.
