How can I make c £700?

Due to an error on my part I've cost our family about £700. DH couldn't be nicer about it but I feel horrendous. Fortunately we can afford it so it's not like I need a loan or anything but I want to try and make it up if that makes sense.
I've had a clear out and put stuff on Vinted but that's not touching the sides
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to make a set amount of money please?!

Work overtime?

DarkestBerty · 20/08/2025 08:20

You can afford it, and your DP is fine about it. You don't need to "make it up".

Just chalk it up to experience and move on.

HappySummerDays · 20/08/2025 08:21

Could you spend less until you reach the £700 mark ?

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 20/08/2025 08:31

You don’t need to “make it up” - you’re not a teenager or a naughty child. Forgive yourself and move on! 🥰

MoneyIdeasNeeded · 20/08/2025 08:40

No overtime possible regrettably.

As other have said, you made a mistake that cost you money - everyone is fine about it, you can afford it, you are not short - move on!

Do some switching bank accounts

Cancercomeback · 20/08/2025 09:02

Honestly you need to let this one go. You guys can afford it and your husband is okay, you need to be okay with it too. If your husband had made the mistake would you expect him to make it up financially? Or would you tell him it’s fine and not to be so silly? You are beating yourself up about it, so it’s not ultimately about the money anyway.

MoneyIdeasNeeded · 20/08/2025 09:17

I don't think I'm any good at letting things go. I do beat myself up so much about stuff

If this was your husband or a friend who had done this, what would you say to them? Sometimes I have to think of myself as a third person to treat myself well (promise I’m not weird!) Do you have kids? You wouldn’t want them growing up and beating themselves up for small things - mimic the behaviour you want for them to grow in to strong, balanced adults.

Skip your next 6 months of Botox. If you never have Botox then you’ve already saved well over £700 for your family. Sorted!

So maybe you need to learn to stop doing that. Your DH has already told you it doesn’t matter ☺️

Smartiepants79 · 20/08/2025 09:32

I agree with just being more frugal than normal until you’ve saved the money back up. If you don’t need th £700 for bills or rent or whatever then I think you should try and let it go.

Oh I did this recently OP! I pranged my car and my insurance excess was about this amount. Like you, we could afford it, and I'm a high earner. But I felt like I had to make it up somehow, I know that sounds nuts but I was cross with myself that a 2 second mistake cost that much money. I work hard and don't like to waste money.

I put stuff on Vinted and made about £200, then I cashed in all the cash back I had in Quidco, Topcashback etc. I then had a low spend few weeks to 'make up' the rest.

MoneyIdeasNeeded · 22/08/2025 09:50

Thanks everyone. This is all very helpful.
It's come in at much more than 700 and DH and I also realized we messed up a vet insurance claim earlier this year
So we are basically c 1400 down.

I'm going to stop buying myself anything til Christmas, I once did a year no spend so I think that will help me

A no-spend year is a great idea.

Also look at other cost savings - think about phone or wifi subscription switches or utilities.

Maybe you could pick up some casual work in the run up to christmas or register with some online agencies as a babysitter?

Any skills? A friend of mine makes money by making sweet cones and selling them via FB or Etsy, another does amazing face painting at kids parties.
