How much to expect to be included within a holiday cottage?

We are currently away for 7 nights in a beautiful holiday cottage. We paid £2000 for the week.

Little things have really irritated me. There is a dishwasher for example but not a single dishwasher tablet included, a washing machine but no wash tablet, a fancy coffee machine but not coffee pods for it. No washing up liquid, the only bin bag included was the one in the bin. For a family of 5 for the week, one bin bag wouldn't be enough!

The instructions clearly say leave as you found it. I'm happy to do that, but surely if they want me to clean then they'd at least provide a dish cloth and some surface spray? Perhaps I've been spoilt in the past, however I'm sure even a haven caravan we've stayed in had a little cleaning bundle with a dish cloth, washing up liquid etc.

What would you expect to be included at that price point?

Gets 4.7 average review

I know daft but for last 8 years only done minimum of 4.9 and never disappointed. Honestly, it’s been 12 sensational air bnbs and 4.9 is my stake in the ground!

Don't you mean thank you to the poster who kindly shared the link you asked for? What an odd response, even if it's not for you.

What vehicle do you have @BlackeyedSusan ?

A large car.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/08/2025 11:23

We have to other criteria as essential.(Parking, washing machine and distance to beach due to disability) So the pool of houses to choose from is smaller.

Most of them have most stuff but nearly all of them have random stuff missing. And regularly shit pans, peelers, tin openers.(Need specific due to disability and finger strength, ie: good supermarket ones of particular designs)

I would bring all of that stuff with me and not expect it there. Even the coffee pods if I know what machine it is. Maybe I have low expectations 😂

Totally agree. "Thank you" would have covered it.

What is the appeal of SC if you feel you need to take everything but the kitchen sink? It’s bad enough packing clothes, food, binoculars, games, walking shoes, and all the rest of it without adding in cleaning materials , washing powder and toilet rolls along with hand soap etc. Absolutely ridiculous. It’s not a caravan holiday.

Totally agree. Also, what about international guests or people who want to travel by public transport? The default shouldn’t be having to stuff the car with everything bar the kitchen sink.

So much for so little. My DD and I flew to Crete and had a week all inclusive for just a few pounds more.

Agreed!

I use air BnB SC lots and have had, without exception, the most wonderful experiences. Dishwasher tab, laundry capsules, cleaning products, condiments… I could go on.

But the idea of packing an oven roasting dish, bog roll, potato peeler (actually the notion of peeling potatoes on holiday is bloody unappealing too!) would mean I’d probably dread going!

A large car.

Must be to include two teens, an adult, luggage, wetsuits, a bucket, all cleaning material, frying pan, roasting dish, bog roll…, I’m imagining a moving lorry actually!

A similar thread was running last year and holiday cottage owners said they were fed up with people making off with so many things that they had cut back on what they left out for people. A few dishwasher tablets out of a multi pack isn’t much to ask or some cheap hand soap , but I guess it depends on the place and the owners as to what they feel is appropriate to be left for people because others have made it worse by nicking everything!

EasySqueezy · 22/08/2025 10:49

Seems very tight. You would expect some tea bags and biscuits and a pint of milk at least. Most places I’ve stayed in supply dishwasher tablets or washing up liquid. Best place I stayed at was an English Heritage cottage. A full hamper of food and wine!

A few pounds more than what?

Surely what the Op paid

Well no, not necessarily, because I was reading the thread in order and just saw another link.

Plus, the OP said the property was for a family of 5, whereas the post I was replying to was talking about a holiday for 2 people, so I wondered if they had adjusted for that. Otherwise it's not much of a comparison.

I’d presume that the poster was comparing her holiday cost with the holiday cost… of the op rather than a… link (?)

and I don’t suppose the poster thought a great deal of the detail behind her comment.

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 22/08/2025 16:16

Defiantly bad form . Who wants to be faffing around buying that stuff i would absolutely expect that to be included.

2 grand is a lot yes.

Fizbosshoes · 22/08/2025 16:19

We are abroad at a holiday villa. They left not much more than bugger all.
We left the house at 3.30am this morning and couldn't get in til 4pm and immediately had to go shopping because they've left....salt, pepper and 2 dishwasher tablets! Not even a bottle of water. We booked with the same company a few years ago and I dont remember them being so stingy!

They do have tea towels though!

You might. I didn't. Because I read the start of the thread ages ago and had just read a few recent posts discussing a completly different place in Slovenia. The price of that place was just a few posts up (not just in the link) and there was a lot more detail to judge on (because there was link).

But whatever, this is a weird argument. I just wondered which holiday she was referring to. It wasn't an attack.

Not stingy so much as very very clear that this is fully self catered and nothing provided unless you purchase the welcome pack
