How do you wake up in the morning

Ive always been a deep sleeper, but in the last year (41) ive found that i keep sleeping through my alarm. I bought an alarm clock, i put the volume is up all the way. I set two alarms, the alarm clock and my phone, I still sleep through both alarms. I set three alarms once and i still slept through!

Some days i start work at 9am. Other days i start at 1pm. Ive now become so stressed about missing work that on the days I start at 9am , ive been staying awake all night.

Any other deep sleepers out there, how do you wake up?

With about six phone alarms, all with different sounds. I snooze them all. Or I think I do. Sometimes I turn them off by accident and still oversleep.

I'm lucky enough to work nights so can just get up when I want (usually between 7-8).
Although I'm another one who panics if I have to set an alarm so they rarely go off as I'm awake, ready and waiting!

I have a cat that won’t bloody let me have a lie in!! But failing that, I have a few alarms dotted around the room so I don’t get up and turn them off while I’m half asleep.

I got an Apple Watch. The buzzing on my wrist wakes me up much more than sound does and it’s more difficult to switch off when you’re sleepy so you have to come to a bit more.

I really hate waking up, I’m useless in the mornings. If I had my druthers, the work day would be 10 till 6!

Straight out of bed into the shower does the job for me whatever time of the morning.

Me too! This is what I came on to say. The vibrating works way better for me than noise.

Try an alarm in a metal cake tin on the opposite side of your room, so you have to get up for it

mynameiscalypso · 20/08/2025 08:28

Apple Watch here too. I often sleep through my DH’s alarm as I take sedating medication at night but the vibrations from watch always wake me up

My pain in the arse cat perches on my hip until I wake up, usually wondering why my hip hurts.

DeanStockwelll · 20/08/2025 08:39

I am and always have been a heavy sleeper.
I use my phone on Spotify as a alarm with two alarms set the 1st one is a fairly quiet song set to 10 minutes before the second one which is much more of a get up and go / loud song.
I change the songs every now and then but I can still sleep through them.
I don't think it helps that I have four different times that I have to wake between 4.30am and 8am up depending on where I am working.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 20/08/2025 08:41

I found that snoozing the alarm was my downfall. I lost track of how many times I'd snoozed it and the temptation of thinking "10 more minutes..." was too strong. Multiple alarms similarly failed as in my half-asleep state I'd forget which one was the final one.

I've now got a nightlight that turns on at 6:50 that starts to wake me up then at 7 the alarm goes off and the big lights turn on. Works every time.

EBearhug · 20/08/2025 08:43

I have a sunrise alarm - over half an hour, it slowly lights up, before the actual alarm goes off. Then it's usually needing the loo that actually gets me out of bed.

But if you struggle to wake so much - are you getting enough sleep? Can you go to bed earlier?

Goinghome25 · 20/08/2025 08:46

If youre in a town or city just leave the small bedroom window open.

Your alarm choices to name a few ...

Cacophony of birds at sunrise,
Crashing and squealing bin lorries
Neighbours motorbike
Slamming front doors

I am never asleep later than 7am!

Agree, you need a cat, op 🤭

Can you put your and alarm clock across the room from you?

Are you too warm at night? Maybe have a window open so that its cold in the mornings? x

I hate waking up in the mornings. I have multiple alarms all within about 5 mins of each other. I also rely on DS and DH waking me up. Occasionally I find it easy and it surprises me, but generally it’s the worst time of day for me.

I’m considering one of those Lumie clocks for when Autumn comes along because I find waking up in the dark almost impossible.

RoseDog · 20/08/2025 09:01

The cat at 6am, she has severe malnutrition, she hasn’t had her bowl topped up since 10pm the night before, she may die and let’s everyone know!

BeyondMyWits · 20/08/2025 09:23

For many years I have been a bed at 10-10.30ish, up at 6.30-7.00ish (8 hours average) person.

So I wake by habit. No alarm required.

Retired now and have really tried to change it. But no, it seems I am doomed to forever be a natural early riser. Though DH says he knows when I am ill as I get up a little bit later.
