What in your life have you automated?

I saw something earlier about automation in the home and wondered if anyone had any fabulous ways they are using it?

we have lots of automated bulbs and Alexa has routines to turn lamps on and off and will do my evening routines easily.

I use Amazon subscribe and save for lots of household basics and cupboard items.

I use an online pharmacy for repeat prescriptions and they practically just turn up, a quick email reminder and it’s all done.

we use a shared online diary for meal planning and just set certain things to repeat.

moonpig has all birthdays listed so I can easily send cards which I forget all the time (also has addresses quickly available!)

i have a milkman so that means bread, milk and juice just turn up.

Any clever ways you are using it? I saw one where they had an Alexa bed time routine and got Alexa to play certain music and change lighting at bedtime to be calm and cosy and help transition into sleep.

How did I not know about shared notes? Love this thread! Wish I could feed my alexa shopping list into my tesco online order automatically.

As my washing machine is a liar, it says 3 minutes left then takes 8 or however many minutes it likes I now have it plugged into a Tapo smartplug which monitors when the electrical consumption drops and then it messages me on my phone. Same with the tumble dryer, I get notified when it has finished. No more listening for the quietest beeps from the utility.

Lamps are on timers in the hall and lounge so we never have to turn them on or off. Lights on a sensor in the kitchen (not main lights) means you can walk in with your hands full and are able to see.

We put a temperature monitor inside the larder freezer as we previously had one die and we could have saved the contents had we known it was getting warmer inside the freezer.

Shared shopping list, shared movie/tv show ideas of things to watch. Shared calendar that the children can add into too so we know when they are not here for dinner.

I love this thread. I don’t have anything extra to add to what’s already been said, but I’m definitely going to look into deadlocks and spend some time with ChatGPT setting it up to help me meal planning, which is my most dreaded task.

@SimoneHere”It then preps the online order which I just need to approve and pay” do you mean it puts the order into your online shopping app? Because that would be AMAZING!

@Beachtastic @WonderingWanda please share which robovac & mop you have. I need to get one

WonderingWanda · 20/08/2025 08:24

@chasingpavementsnotpayments I have the Eufy X10 Omni. Really happy with it as we have hard floors all the way through downstairs.

Yes, it is bliss 😊. It prompts us to check need for things from the non-meal list (eg bread, loo rolls etc), and to confirm levels of certain recipe ingredients (e.g. spices, to make sure we’re not buying a tub of cumin every week), complies the list and adds to cart.

I trained my AI with the family’s favourite recipes (starting with Gousto ones that we like, and adding others) and now it suggests our meal plans based on what we have liked recently, what we have eaten in recent weeks (to balance nutrition), who’s going to be home, how much time there is to meal prep on any given day (eg Tuesdays are always rushed) etc.

It gives suggestions plus alternatives which we then tweak to agree a meal plan. It then preps the online order which I just need to approve and pay 🙂

It’s like Gousto on steroids.

(Disclaimer - I work in AI)

I’m learning a lot from this thread but this really stood out. Which AI do you use for this?

ChatGPT with FastAPI (python backend for the logic and flow), SQLight, Google Calendar, HomeKit API, Sainsburys API.

I’m working on the recommendation engine at the moment, and then will streamline the backend logic a bit more.

It’s a side of desk project as an interesting way to help me explore different AI architectures and tools.
