Does anyone have reasonable experience of the roads please. .I have become an extremely nervous passenger DH drives and we went to Cornwall recrntly and it was too stressful for me I couldn't bear the lanes ,single track no passing huge trackers high hedges.....
Id love to do fo the above but I'm wondering whether a train maybe better ?

It depends where you are going but the roads are fine - don’t have the high hedge narrow lanes!

however, you may find windy mountain roads stressful - especially if you are taking your UK car

And the trains are very good

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2025 17:33

Agreed. Both are mountainous, so the roads are windy. We’ve been to both by train but you’d possibly still need to use the odd bus.

LIZS · 19/08/2025 17:37

Trains are good and reluable, but the roads are fine unless you attempt mountain passes or remote resorts. The main issues are the drop on the side and meeting post-busses but there are plenty of passing places. Views can be spectacular though.

It depends, but if you are driving eg mountain passes and the mont blanc tunnel etc, they are very high up over ravines. We drove a back road into Lugano and the ravines were a sheer drop beyond the barrier.

It doesn't sound like you could cope.

The main roads are great. Easy to drive on and very modern.
But...there is the potential to go high and windy as they have to go around hills. So you can have nice sweeping roads but with drops on the side. Sometimes with barriers and sometimes without barriers.

Fun driving if you like that kind of thing.

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 19/08/2025 18:59

Windy I'm just about ok with it as long as we can pass each other easily sheer drops and no barrier with buses no

I'd imagine both have far fewer potholes.

LimoncelloSpritz · 19/08/2025 19:13

Depends where. Go though san Gottardo tunnel from Lucerne direction, ok as I recall. Go over the pass, Susten I think, I nearly died of terror. I’d get the train if nervous passenger like me. At least you can sit on the floor if there’s a scary bit.

LimoncelloSpritz · 19/08/2025 19:15

From France through Mont Blanc tunnel was better. A few viaducts I didn’t like, but no sheer drops off the side of the road.

LIZS · 19/08/2025 19:56

Would you be ok with train tracks over viaducts and in long tunnels?

Davros · 19/08/2025 20:03

The buses and trains are excellent.

LIZS · 19/08/2025 20:05

And bear in mind some resorts are only accessible by road so you might inadvertently take a postbus along a windy or precipitous road.

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 19/08/2025 20:17

@LIZS yea I think so because there is no human error .

Long tunnels depends how long .

Both roads and trains are good.

TheFateNdoftheWedge · 21/08/2025 20:25

@pinkbackground thanks ,do you think the roads are wide etc and safe

The trains are wonderful and much less stressful than finding yourself on a windy mountain road with sheer drops. Depending on when you are going, there may still be ice on some mountain roads much later in the summer than you may expect. I would definitely be planning a holiday by train in your situation.
