Anyone else go clothes shopping and think WTF at 95% of the stuff?

I’ve never been someone who follows fashion, not in the sense I wear garish ‘alternative’ clothes, more in the sense I’m quite boring in what I like and I wear what suits me and what I feel comfortable in.

I’m also a bludy stupid apple shape which is hellish to clothe, so even if I see something I like, chances are it’s going to look not great.

My issue is, I feel like I hardly like any clothes. It’s a bit like online dating, no no no no no maybe no! It feels like an utter chore to find the nugget of gold in a store of items - for example, I might think that looks nice then I’ll turn it round and it has a big gold band attached to the neck line, or I’ll see a nice jumper from the front, pick it up then down the arms it will have several little bows on and I think what’s the point in that! Or a nice pair of jeans that have a massive buckle attached or studs down the back.

I get everyone has different tastes and they have to accommodate everyone but it seems that finding normal clothes is harder work than it should be and it makes shopping an utter chore.

I think I’ll set my own shop up called the boring stuff!

Uniqlo. They don’t mess with their stuff.

OopsNoHoliday · 19/08/2025 13:06

I agree. I’m also apple shaped! But my dd15 is a willowy size 6 with a small waist and small chest and even she can’t find clothes she likes (“too many ruffles.. too lacy… too boxy… too short… who would wear THAT it’s so ugly…”)

I wonder who buys most of the stuff in the shops honestly.
i am stuck with Vinted most of the time

That’s the phrase I was looking for! ‘mess with it’, sums it up perfectly!!

I’ll have a look at that site thank you

Yes, I'm short, and nothing fits right, or if it does, it has some weird detail that I hate. I just want classic shapes, quality materials and very little fuss, but it doesn't seem to exist, especially not in petite.

RaraRachael · 19/08/2025 13:12

I had a lottery win a few weeks ago and decided to treat myself to new clothes. After several shopping trips, the money is still in my purse, untouched. Today I had 2 pair of sandals delivered - both will have to go back.
There is nothing in the shops that I like, far less can be bothered to try on and the whole internet shopping things just annoys me - all the faffing about having to take stuff back if it's no good,

Comedycook · 19/08/2025 13:14

Yanbu. I don't understand why plainish clothes that are flattering are so hard to come by

HangryBrickShark · 19/08/2025 13:14

Agree. Most of the tops are too short by far for me, the trousers all seem to be 28" length and none of the logo type clothes that were so common in the 80's and 90's unless you pay stupid money for them.

I have to say TEMU is the only way I tend to shop these days, bright colours and designs for bigger/realistic sized women.

SpecialMilkMonitor · 19/08/2025 13:15

Why are you even bothering to try to find anything decent in physical shops, though? Even if you do see something you like, the shop assistant will suggest you go online to find the right size or colour.

Anyway, unadorned, sensible but contemporary clothes?

Uniqlo as suggested above. Or:

Community Clothing

which has the advantage of impeccable ethics.

UK made sustainable, ethical clothing & accessories for men and women

Community Clothing was established by Patrick Grant with a simple goal; to sell quality, affordable, sustainable and ethical men's & women's clothing, whilst creating jobs & restoring economic prosperity in the UK’s most deprived areas. All clothes mad...

I’m pleased I’m not alone then! I have a DD 17 and we went shopping the other day for new clothes for school and she was like your DD. Where’s the normal basic stuff 😂as you say, too ruffled, puffy, diamantés…. It’s just for school so we don’t need all the added extras 😭

This is a fair point, but I can't find anything online either!

I normally don’t lol but I took my teenage daughter to a big city at her request, so thought it might be nice to find something for myself but I was wrong 😂

Thanks for the links

Toast? I know the brand is marmite on here, but I love it. Gorgeous fabric, well-cut and washes perfectly.

usedtobeaylis · 19/08/2025 13:26

Everything seems to he short, tight, gaudy and/or with bits cut out. It's so annoying and it should not be this hard to just find a regular t shirt.

HungreeHipp0 · 19/08/2025 13:30

I popped into H&M after work the other day, I rarely by new clothes for myself, usually head straight to the kids section, but I had time for a browse. And honestly most of the stuff would either make me look like I'm dressed as a small child or that I accidently left the house in my pyjamas.

I'm nearly 40 and as I don't shop very often, I've realised I've no idea what my 'go-to clothes shop' could be anymore.

KateMiskin · 19/08/2025 13:32

It's the fucking tiers and ruffles and puff sleeves.
Most of my clothes are from Uniqlo, La Redoute and CC. They have cotton and fewer frills.
Physical shops are hopeless.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/08/2025 13:38

Me! But... to be fair, I rarely have time to set foot outside of the farming world, so a trip to the city centre with a friend was quite eye-opening (in an interesting way!). My 'strappy top' collection extends to shearing vests, I don't own a pair of sandals (shock, horror to the pedicure lady...), and my colour scheme generally consists of clothes in various shades of black, grey, navy, green and brown 😁

When you open up The Boring Stuff shop, may I ask that your clothing line involves necklines and trousers that you don't have to worry about bending over in, and pockets in women's clothing?

(I really hope this won’t be another thread where people are given information but prefer to ignore it. I’m cross enough on another thread right now …)

AtleastitsnotMonday · 19/08/2025 13:44

It’s the cropped t shirts, crappy polyester and tacky gold rings that get me. (Don’t even get me started on adult clothing with characters on, absolutely not for me!)
The white company do basics well.

RedToothBrush · 19/08/2025 13:46

95% of the stuff?

More like 99%!

KateMiskin · 19/08/2025 13:50

For regular good quality cotton tshirts that wash well with no bows and puffs, I buy Rapanui.

Lovemycat2023 · 19/08/2025 13:50

I’m going to get flamed but I still find M&S best for basics, even if you have to do a lot of looking. That includes petite clothes too. This summer I’ve bought a pair of linen wide leg trousers and a striped top which are both spot on.

NoMoreHotHols · 19/08/2025 13:51

I find brands like Cos and Reiss do classic things. Unfortunately both are out of my price range.

I certainly will keep that in mind!

If you manage to find something good, try to buy 2 or 3. It's worth it.

muddyford · 19/08/2025 14:12

I buy Seasalt men's T-shirts. Colours are nice, longer in the back and sleeves. I used to buy from Lands End but they have moved away from mainly natural fibres. Too many "embellishments " and ghastly colours in M&S. Who wants a polyester bow on cotton knickers?
