What’s the best part of a hotel breakfast?

Assuming that you like them.

I very rarely eat breakfast as I’m not hungry until around 1pm, sometimes later but I will make the occasional exception for a hotel breakfast.

One of the best I had was in a hotel in Jersey which offered many choices including an entire side of hot smoked salmon. I ate so much of the salmon that I’m surprised that I didn’t die of sodium poisoning.

I’m going away this weekend and curious to see what’s on offer. More often than not I usually just have fruit juice and coffee, occasionally cereal but I still enjoy seeing if they have any interesting options.

For some reason those tiny glasses of fruit juice taste incredible in the morning and the pack of 2 wrapped Weetabix tastes better than it does at home.

So what are your favourite hotel breakfast items and which hotels offer the best?

My favourite ever was in Portugal. Some sort of still warm cornbread rolls with a soft cheese and something which seemed like quince jam....delicious. I think I like the bread cheese and meats of a continental breakfast best.

We stayed in an Airbnb and had toast and scrambled eggs each morning, it was the best scrambled eggs I ever had, but I suspect it was because someone else made it...

MsSmartShoes · 20/08/2025 23:15

I like hit drinks and food to order but everything else as a buffet.

my ideal order:
camomile tea
smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs
melon
wholemeal roll and marmalade

We were in Thailand for 2 weeks earlier this year and all 3 properties had a buffet type set up of everything imaginable.

i would start with tropical fruit, then a Greek yogurt with passion fruit on top, then onto a cooked course or salmon/cheeses plate.

interestingly while i was eating more than i do at home, it was healthier and along with swimming which I also don’t/cant do at home, when I returned I felt so much more energetic and fitter.

should go away more often. Lol.

I was in the far east recently and the breakfast buffets were amazing. Catering to all tastes they had western cooked breakfast, continental stuff. Curries, rice, spring rolls, fried chicken, sushi. Pastries galore.

my dd had some very odd combinations….

I absolutely adore a premier inn breakfast. I only eat toast at home, but in a PI i go all out. Best part is black pudding. I would never buy it but i always eat it there. A d every thing else going!

I love an omelette station in a hotel, usually abroad, don't think I've seen one here.

@FrenchandSaunders oddly enough I was staying at the Leonardo Hotel in Glasgow this week and they had an omelette station manned by a chef! That alone was definitely worth the price of the breakfast. They also had a good selection of continental meats and cheeses. The haggis was good too. They even had oatcakes and chutney. Turns out they’re originally a German hotel chain so that explains why the breakfast was so good. Germans love their frühstück!

I was wondering why there were so many Germans in my hotel until I looked up their website and saw a majority of their hotels are in Germany. They’re a solid choice for me now going forward if I have a bit more budgetary wiggle room than a Premier Inn.

Having it done for you , and being able to walk away without tidying up !

This, even if the food and service is "fine " I am not bothered because I didn't cook it or need to tidy it away.

Hotel breakfast in Northern Ireland, soda and potato bread

Dabberlocks · 21/08/2025 17:09

I agree with those who say the best part is the total lack of effort required on my part. No cooking, no washing-up. Brilliant.

They like their bread don't they 😀

Scandinavian breakfasts are decent but otherwise I am a bit short changed as a coeliac.
all the beautiful breads and baked goods are not available to me. I eat eggs at home most days so that’s no treat. And a plate of cheese and processed meats on their own isn’t something I get overly excited by sadly

some places will do a gluten free section but only once in Greece was i wowed by it

GasPanic · 21/08/2025 17:26

Omelette bar.

It took 3 goes to spell omelette right.

JacquelineHigh · 21/08/2025 17:41

Absolutely agree with @changeme4this

We stayed in 2 different hotels in Thailand. There was every sort of cuisine you could imagine. Full English, Thai food, Chinese food, Indian food - most of it cooked to order. There was also a bbq and you could have steak if you wanted it. Plus an amazing range of breads, yoghurts, fruit, cheese, cold meats etc. Loads of vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options.

Curiously, they also had "beef bacon" which was...um...different.

....and a bottle of rum.

GingerKombucha · 21/08/2025 17:51

Gleneagles has the best breakfast I've ever had - a wall of different breads and pastries, multiple types of smoked salmon, meats, cheeses and fruits, about 10 different fresh juices and champagne to make them into bucks fizz, three types of vodka to make bloody marys with and a whole kids section with a vast array of sprinkles for yogurt.

Beautifulsunflowers · 21/08/2025 17:56

The variety. At home it’s just cereal or toast or yogurt and granola. A croissant is a huge treat!
When you stay in a hotel the variety is amazing- lots of juices to choose from, cereals, hot buffet, continental buffet, selection of breads, pastries and fruits…..and unlimited tea!

BrendaSmall · 21/08/2025 21:13

We frequently go to our local Brewers Fayre 🤣 for the buffet breakfast!
Kids eat free, my grandchildren love it, they’re in their element, especially one of the boys, who has a plate of baked beans and sausages, then pancakes with Nutella and then a yogurt, they all drink the fruit juices!

pinkpony88 · 21/08/2025 22:44

Hash browns 😍

whatwasthatnoise · 21/08/2025 23:14

I'm Coeliac so I often have to look at all the lovely food I can't eat.
I stayed in a hotel in Dunkeld last year. Went for breakfast and, to my utter delight, found a separate gluten free table of food! It had a toaster! Bread, some GF pastries, bagels, individual bags of cereal. And the table was far enough away from everything else that no one used the toaster for regular bread to beat the queue. There was the regular buffet of hot items, fruit, yoghurt too. Sadly I was a bit hungover so couldn't enjoy to my full capacity.

Sorry - I like a bit of blue cheese, but not in dauphinoise potatoes; that sounds hideous.
