Desserts at a party

If you were invited to a party and were just served desserts, cupcakes little brownies that type of thing would you be annoyed that was all you were getting instead of a buffet or savoury?
I'm having a party but don't want to be cooking or making a big buffet, or curry etc but thought maybe this could work , but I'm worried people might be starving and we come across as bad hosts not feeding the guests!!???

You're all right I'm glad I asked!!! I think I will do cheese and meat platters, and some dips and crisps, just didn't want to do a huge table of food like we normally do, i end up exhausted before the party has even started!!

Make sure you make it clear you’re only serving nibbles. I think arriving at 7 I wouldnt have dinner before so would be starving if not warned

Party starts at 7 so maybe it will be to late for sweet things,
I had thought about doing canapes but don't want to be cooking and using the oven when guests arrive

7? That's dinner time. I would guess that most people will be expecting to be fed, and if you warn them that there will only be dessert they may show up late because they need to eat first.

PeacheyPeach · 19/08/2025 10:46

Yes think I'll just send a reminder to everyone coming to have dinner before they get here!

Why are you having a party if you don’t want to cook or arrange a buffet?!
Either host a drinks party and make it clear that’s what it is, or cater it properly.

GameWheelsAlarm · 19/08/2025 10:51

It's fine if you tell people in advance.

Let people know that the snacks are all going to be dessert-based so they should have their meal before coming but leave plenty of room for pudding.

Yes, this.

@KilkennyCats I always cater for our social gatherings usually, but this time I want to simplify things instead of me being like a wet rag in the kitchen!! We have a very large family so we have lots of things going on all the time , I always over estimate for food and drinks and it's a lot of expense and time that I don't have at the moment!!!

I would not expect you to cook or go to any trouble but would much rather have some savoury nibbles - Quorn mini eggs, cheese & biscuits, cold quiche etc. I once went to a 50th Birthday party at someone's house where there were only drinks!! Absolutely nothing to soak up the drink - not even some crisps. We weren't expecting that at all - the hostess said "She didn't want to put out loads of food and then have to throw it all away"! If I had known I would have eaten beforehand.😞

Lifelover16 · 19/08/2025 15:19

I would enjoy it as long as I was aware and could eat beforehand. Maybe include something like “ we are celebrating xxxx with cake and champagne “.

Could you not make it a pot luck and ask everyone to bring a dish?

landlordhell · 19/08/2025 15:53

It’s not for me. I’m not a sweet fan. But if it was a party at 7 I wouldn’t expect food I’d be happy with some chips and olives etc
Savoury doesn’t have to be hot. You could make some pasta salads/ cous cous salads in the day and chill

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2025 16:14

MIL had a pub food theme for her 70th- ham sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, packs of savoury snacks on the cardboard hanging things. Plus 2 traybake puddings.

PeacheyPeach · 19/08/2025 16:18

Yes I'm definitely not doing the desserts, I'll do cheese and meat platters and pop crisps in nice bowls around the place so there's lots of snacky bits xx

Whilst I would happily hoover up desserts, I don't think most people would feel the same. Buy stuff in if you don't want to cook. Some nice crusty baguettes, butter and cheeses would go down well I'm sure

BCBird · 19/08/2025 16:22

I still think some desserts would be nice. Or maybe thats just me?😂

Bowling4soup · 19/08/2025 16:35

What about afternoon tea style? So mainly cakes sweet stuff, and scones plus sandwiches . Morrisons do big sandwich platters

FullOfMomsense · 19/08/2025 17:32

Get loads of nice bread, butter, cheese and meat platters too. No prep, serve themselves and goes will with booze.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 19/08/2025 17:34

It’s fine if it isn’t held at a meal time, if it is then you would need to tell people in advance so they can eat before. My DH for example doesn’t like anything sweet.
