Effect of exercise waning as we age?

Just what the title says really.. I'm mid sixties and for some time have noticed that after a swim session I'm exhausted and not energised and motivated as before..😐 same to a lesser extent after gym or long walk.

Obviously we all have to age but when you've put so much effort into keeping fit and it's starting to not pay off.. bit demoralising..
Anyone having similar experience out there?

I get that after a longish cycle ride . Like exhaustion kicking in two days later. Thinking of doing shorter more frequent exercises?

Maybe see your GP? Sometimes we need some bloodwork done to check for anemia, iron, magnesium, b12 etc.

I’m in my 50s, I’ve always run, biked and lifted weights, but my body definitely isn’t what it use to be 😄 My weight sessions are shorter these days as they leave me so tired and where I could knock out 30 push-ups in one hit, I know have to do them in sets of 10. HIIT kills me these days and I can’t run the long distances (8-10 miles) that I could even 5 years ago but now do a few 5km a week. But it’s all good still and it becomes more about looking after the bones, mobility, balance and maintaining the fitness I have.

Sixty here and really notice this. I cycle, swim and hill walk. It's not getting any easier or any less knackering. I've exercised all my life, have active hobbies and did a manual job.
Only this week I've thought I need to really look at my diet (already pretty good) and start thinking of going to bed earlier. Following this thread for tips.

Apparently bodies decline massively at 45 and at 60.

wish Michael mosley was still around...he'd be researching this problem ...

Sleep does play a big part in it.. some of us wake up during the night several times ..amount of deep sleep diminishes as age kicks in..🤷‍♀️

I think you're right @wavingfuriously .

Just reading your post I've put two and two together. This last month my normally quiet road has been much busier due to a road works diversion from a main road. The diversion ended yesterday, I had my best sleep in weeks last night and have woken up feeling better already.

I'm going to focus on getting better, more and quality sleep in the way I focus on my exercise and see if it improves things.

I’ve noticed this too at 60. I keep wondering why I don’t feel fitter and can’t understand it!

suki1964 · 19/08/2025 10:34

61 here and finally got to see a gp this month to discuss my ageing woes - lack of sleep, pure exhaustion, - B12 deficiency- now on a supplement and Im back sleeping and I'm much more energised , its worth getting checked out

Yep, I'm 62 and if I walk a brisk three miles or more, I'm as stiff as a board the next day. Just three years ago, I was walking between four and six miles a day to help with weight loss and I felt fantastic after each journey. Now I'm wiped out. Sad
