Reading festival

Didn't know where to post this but my 16 year old daughter is going to Reading festival on Friday. There are four of them - all 16 - and they've been told they need to take their passports - no copies. We go on holiday the next day so I'm extremely reluctant to let her.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Lots of info on the website but not to this specific question

My son had to do this. I was stressed about it but the passport did make its way home. Make sure your daughter has a ‘bum bag’ I think they wear them over their shoulders nowadays. I told my son to put his bum bag in his sleeping bag with him as it had his phone, chargers and passport.

If you google Pass approved ID. And then choose "Apply for Card". Choose your card issuer , my daughter chose the post office Easy ID. She just had to download an app and scan her passport. It is free and Reading Festival website says it is approved. On the phone and a virtual card. Done in ten minutes this evening.

Why do they need their passport? My son is going -he’s 18. Does he need it? Or will his driving license be ok?

It is really for the 16 year olds who look younger to prove they are 16 plus. They don't have a driving licence and passport is usually the only id they have. Driving licence will be fine. Which is why the Pass Approved App thing is useful as it means they don't have to physically take it.

What happens if you don't have a passport? Not that my DC have ever wanted to go, we can usually hear it from our garden anyway!

We operate a Challenge 25 policy. The following forms of identification are accepted:

  • A Passport (Not a photocopy)
  • Full Driving Licence or Provisional Licence
  • A Proof of Age Card bearing a PASS hologram
  • A Ministry of Defence identity card
  • A National identity card issued by an EU member state
Please note: This may vary with certain establishments/traders onsite. Please be aware that bar staff always reserve the right to ask for proof of age if you look under 25.

Thanks everyone for you help!

I found the Yoti app which I think is what you're referring to and did it last night - it's PASS approved and has the hologram and doesn't allow you to screenshot so I'm pretty sure that's fine. Absolutely no way she's taking her passport with the holiday the next day!!!!!

Driving license is fine - he might need it to prove he's 18 for alcohol reasons

Could you go with her to get her wristband then she can give her passport back to you, you can usually leave the festival and go back in

That’s only if you try to buy alcohol, so if she doesn’t they shouldn’t ask. You don’t need to prove that you are underage!
