Perimenopause and not being able to sleep

Ilovethesunshine123 · 18/08/2025 15:59

I've been creeping into peri for a while now. The symptom I'm finding the hardest is sleeping. I've always been able to fall asleep straight away and stay asleep until my alarm. Now I'm struggling. I'm not too bad at falling asleep initially but i wake up alot in the night now and can't get back to sleep, if i do its the half asleep and half awake feeling. I'm so tired and I've started to need an afternoon nap which i can't have as i work full time. I always have a tired headache too. I do get hot at night so sleep with a fan on but it's not the heat keeping me awake, my brain just won't sleep I can just lie there tired but not sleeping.
Any tips for sleeping better, not sleeping tablets that will knock me out, i need to hear kids in emergencies.

Following this as I feel exactly the same! No alcohol has helped me a bit, as has drinking lots of water through the day then as little as possible after 8pm…

PlutarchHeavensbee · 18/08/2025 16:07

This was me 5 years ago and the only thing that helped was HRT.

TimeToBrew · 18/08/2025 16:10

I'd love to suggest hrt, but I haven't found it to help a jot. Often I can get to sleep but can't for the life of me, stay asleep. I'm on mirtazapine too, the so called sleepy antidepressant, but that doesn't work either. 🤷

No caffeine after lunchtime, and give yourself a rest from any screens for at least an hour before bed. If I'm having a particularly bad time of it, I sometimes have a couple of digestive biscuits or a horlicks before bed.

The other thing that works like a charm for me is to have a purring cat on my pillow. I have one who actually drapes himself over my head and purrs in my ear.

Dabberlocks · 18/08/2025 16:11

Oh yes - I forgot. I take a Piriton every night before bed as well.

(I do have allergies so I'm not just drugging myself up for the sake of it!)

Try magnesium glycinate. (Make sure it’s the glycinate version.)

amber763 · 18/08/2025 16:22

Second magnesium glycinate. It honestly changed my life

LadyLucksalot · 18/08/2025 16:28

Try having Greek yoghurt with honey within 30 minutes of waking up for breakfast. It sounds ridiculous, but absolutely works. I now sleep all the way through.

Livedandlearned · 18/08/2025 16:29

Also recommending magnesium. I’ve just started taking it and I’ve been sleeping better. Sometimes I take a c b d tablet too. I do sometimes wake in the middle of the night but I can fall back asleep.

canyon2000 · 18/08/2025 16:35

A week after starting hrt I was sleeping 7 hours a night.

Zumbador · 18/08/2025 16:44

I take valerian tablets, 2 at bedtime and it helps with the first half of the night. There’s tea and tincture too. Herbal so not addictive and doesn’t lead to drowsiness next day. I don’t use it all the time but I’ve never tried so can’t comment on whether it’s more or less effective if used more regularly.
Also Sleep Better roll on when I wake in the night. I use the pillow spray too but not sure how much difference that makes.

Ilovethesunshine123 · 18/08/2025 16:49

Lots of answers so far, thank you. I tnink i will need to see a dr about hrt. Im currently on the mini pill, can i take hrt with it as by taking it at least im not getting scattered periods to deal with too. Ive never know someone who takes hrt, silly question but is it a tablet?

I dont drink alchol, I only have decafe coffee but i do use screens before bed. I dont have a cat but it could be an excuse to get one. Do you take the yogurt in the morning then to help you at night?

I think I'll l try magnesium first. Does piriton knock you out or if a child calls for you or the phone rings will you be able to wake and respond?

How awful this day in age with all the modern technology and medicines that so many of us still feel this way.

Piriton isn’t that good that it will prevent you hearing your children if they wake. Good luck, hope you find something that works.

I got my magnesium from Holland and Barrett and it’s a 4 in 1, about £14.99 for 120 capsules.

Pepperedpickles · 18/08/2025 17:04

I take HRT alongside the mini pill so you can definitely do this. I have evorel conti patches and the mini pill completely stops any bleeding. (I have been in early menopause since 37, I’m now 44). I find it definitely helps with the sleep issue.

blackheartsgirl · 18/08/2025 17:10

Yes I’m the same, I can’t take HRT which is unfortunate,

My psych (have adhd but not medicated due to heart and kidney problems) prescribed melatonin. That hasn’t helped either.

the only thing that has ever helped is mogadon but that’s been withdrawn cos of other people’s addiction issues and zopiclone (which I can’t take anymore)

I’ve never tried magnesium though.

its really crap and I sympathise so much .

KPPlumbing · 18/08/2025 17:27

I tried everything, including hrt and prescription painkillers. Nothing helped.

The only thing that's worked is 15mg per night of mirtazipine. I'm terrified to come off of it incase my sleep goes back to how it was before.
