Agree no lego or Minecraft key chains. My dc ate at canteen or had sandwiches in foil.

As said, a black rucksack is fine.

Just to say I work in a secondary school and I was surprised at how accepting most of the children are. Things like what rucksack or which shoes just doesn’t seem to matter as much as it did 30/35 years ago.

But if in doubt, black and plain are easiest.

Y7 my son had an Under Armour backpack, Y9 he switched to a North Face one and it still looks new going into Y11.
Water bottle, he has a plain black Chillys series one bottle, they're on sale at the moment. Again this is still going strong 3 years after buying.
His school changed the footwear policy to include all black trainers, he wears Nike Air Max 95's.
Coat, plain black North Face tri-climate, it does all seasons.
Most of his friends have the same Nike backpack, its black with the Nike swoosh in white across the back.

My 15 year old dd graciously agreed to go secondary school shopping for her younger brother who is starting year 7. Her rules were;

Black nike backpack (not too big, no elastic strings criss crossing it as they get pinged)

Black padded coat (but not puffy). Minimal padding, almost like an autumn coat not full on winter one. Acceptable brands are North Face, or nike.

Plain black pencil case (2 pens, 2 pencils, foldable ruler, calculator is optional)

Socks must be plain black, and high (so no trainer socks)

White school shirts have to be short sleeved

She is making him purge anything smiggle, smiggle is acceptable in primary. Plain black boringness is secondary school acceptable

Yes I’d agree go as non stand outy as possible in case. Hopefully he clicks with someone/ a group easily, there’ll be other children in the same boat

Here is the list of acceptable and unacceptable school shoes at my DDs school.

Aldo backpacks are Nike and North Face mainly.

Haha this has made me laugh, my 13yo dd who spends her life complaining her sister copying her has insisted in having a say in everything about her sister starting high school including dressing her as a mini version of herself 😂
