House in the north. No question.

MollyButton · 16/08/2025 14:58

Where is your job, family, friends etc?
And where in “the north” and where exactly in Southampton?

AnotherDayAnotherDog · 16/08/2025 14:59

House in the north every time

Hoppinggreen · 16/08/2025 15:01

"North"???
Quite a big place and it would depend on my circumstances and how many of us there were and what i wanted from a house/location

Only relative left in Yorkshire, currently living in Southampton quite centrally

Do you have a job that you need to attend in person?
Do you you have a partner? Friends?

Is this house/flat for you to live in. Where do you want to live?

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/08/2025 15:07

Why start a conversation and give hardly any information? It's irritating.

Violinist64 · 16/08/2025 15:12

House in the north, no question, unless work meant that I had to stay in the south.

HaddlerScoop · 16/08/2025 15:18

House over flat any day.

The "North" is a huge area, even saying Yorkshire covers a vast geographic area.

Dabberlocks · 16/08/2025 15:25

Neither.

soupyspoon · 16/08/2025 15:27

House in the North, caveated by where and whether you can get work

Im a Southerner, I love 'the North'

Sorry, didn't mean to do this. I'm retiring soon and could sell and move on. The relative is in Barnsley in a nice area

Everything below Scotland is South. But house for me subject to location in t'North. Barnsley? S.Yorks. Some great places round there. Access to both East and West coasts and M1/A1 North. Easy to get to Leeds/Sheffield.

MollyButton · 16/08/2025 15:33

If you are retiring than a nice flat in a nice bit of Southampton could be great. Good public transport and hospitals, and why would you want a house as you age?

JockTamsonsBairns · 16/08/2025 15:36

Just saying "the North" isn't really helpful. Manchester? Orkney? Newcastle?

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 16/08/2025 15:37

Dont live that far from Southampton but avoid it as much as I can. If you can live somewhere lovely in the north and in a house and its for retirement I'd say go for it.. but that's cos I'm not a fan of Southampton.
However i love living where we do, have you considered other areas on the South Coast?

coxesorangepippin · 16/08/2025 15:40

House in the North

shellyleppard · 16/08/2025 15:43

House in the North. Easier to sell

Yachtingaroundtheworldiwish · 16/08/2025 16:03

The north, 100%.

Whatshesaid96 · 16/08/2025 16:21

I worked in Southampton and now live in the Midlands. Honestly if we didn't have relatives to be near we'd move much further north.

Southampton puts you in the right place centrally for a wonderful coastline but also giving you the city aspect. However I found it a PITA to get around in rush hour and the housing stock is very similar within the city borders (Post second World war terraced) and it felt claustrophobic to me.

Whilst I miss living there in some respects living in a city with big pollution problems nah I'd happily go north nowadays just not to be so hemmed in.

ETA: we went from a 3 bed new build terraced townhouse in the suburbs just over the Hamble River to a 4 bed semi detached house with room to extend for the same price in the Midlands.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/08/2025 16:21

Barnsley is my nearest town. It’s ok, with some nice areas, which are still probably considerably cheaper than lots of Southampton. It’s a very long way from the sea though, if that’s a concern to you.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 16/08/2025 16:23

Depends really. I’d be concerned about the flat having (rising) service charges etc.

Yellowbirdcage · 16/08/2025 16:28

Well I’d go for the flat because it would be less of a commute but I’m not you. Needs masses more context.

Kpo58 · 16/08/2025 16:35

I'd go where your friends are based personally.

OutingHobbyWife · 16/08/2025 17:47

House in the north definitely.
