Those with 2 DC. Is there any way for them to each build their own no claims whilst sharing a car. We are happy to be named drivers on car and have black box. Otherwise how do you make it work? Thank you

Not that I came across when we were in this position. if they’re sharing a car the named driver on the insurance policy gets the NCD, the other is a named driver. Some insurance companies might take into account they’ve been a named driver but I imagine that’s getting less common.

if they have a car each you can do multicar cover where they both get it.

Aboutmeabouttime · 16/08/2025 13:54

No - they cannot both build NC years. Had same issue sharing car with my DH

Then if the named driver has an accident the policy holder loses their no claims? thanks

There isn't one, unfortunately. Only the policy holder builds a NCB. We had the same issue when I shared DH's car for a while.

They can insure year on / year off - the one who is in the year off retains their no claims for a year, so they each build.
Slower though as they each only build 1 year every 2 years.
And doesn't help if they have claims obviously.

Better for a couple in a long term relationship who only have one car so they can each maintain their individual no claims.

Not sure what would happen if they each took out separate insurance policies on the same car. You don't have to own the car to take out insurance. I seem to remember there are some potential problems in having the car insured twice though. If there are two drivers on one policy the main user has to be the policy holder and additional drivers don't earn no claims.

Buy a really cheap old car for the other sibling to insure in their name even if it's rarely used and they continue sharing the good car. Although there will be other expenses like tax and MOTs as well as two lots of insurance to pay.

My understanding is you cant have 2 policies on the same car so they couldnt each use a different insurance company on the same car?

I was genuinely gutted to find this out when reading through the policy years ago when I saw a massive ZERO NC next to my name 😢

DH got to keep all his.

Very unfair!!

I don't know how people don't know this.

phonehelppls · 17/08/2025 11:55

@loveawineloveacrisp i think most people do know this but am still trying to see how others have managed the situation.

They need their own car, or, as PP said, alternate who's the named driver each year.

phonehelppls · 17/08/2025 12:59

Can you alternate within the year if one is at uni for example?

Sorry but you're looking for a solution that just doesn't exist.

No. Policies are for a year.
