Have you ever visited New York but stayed outside of Manhattan?

It’s just a thought I’m having. There will be four of us end of next year. We will need two bathrooms. I’m footing the bill. Not for flights though. So I found a fab appartment in New Jersey next to the PATH but my nieces really want to stay in Manhattan. I’ve offered to look at Brooklyn. Is it a real pain. Am I being selfish as I’ve been loads of times and they haven’t? They want to do Halloween stuff.

Get the Hudson train line from Grand Central out to Sleepy Hollow, takes about an hour. Check connections back into Manhattan and to the PATH if returning late.
We stay with family about 30 minutes into the city on the commuter train, or the subway. The only time it’s been an issue was getting back after a long Broadway show as the trains become less frequent after 10pm. So I would check that.
Also just be aware that the subway closes stations or stops trains from stopping at stations apparently at random, and we have had some awful journeys. The commuter trains seem to be more reliable.

We stayed in Maplewood, New Jersey with family. It's a lovely area and it was about 40 minutes on the train to Penn Station.

Irrelevant to this thread I’m afraid (sorry) but I used to live in the next town! My first big teenage crush lived in Maplewood.

OP which PATH station are you looking at? The PATH isn’t a normal commuter train like NJ Transit suburban line trains, it’s a quick direct line to Manhattan, similar to the NYC subway. Used to be some grittier neighbourhoods on the PATH but I suspect it’s all gentrified now.

I’ve stayed in Brooklyn and Hoboken (NJ), both times with friends. Travel in and out of Manhattan is easy and both neighbourhoods (I was in Park Slope in Brooklyn) were fab to hang out in, with nice restaurants and shops. A good break from the high octane Manhattan vibe. It’s been a while now since I went over so not sure if it’s still the case but it used to be that there is no sales tax on clothes in NJ so it’s a good place to head it you’re thinking of shopping - there are I think outlet malls there that cater to Manhattanites as well as tourists.

I stayed in Jersey. It was an easy direct train journey to NYC. To be fair, I was staying with friends but I’d happily do it again.

I’ve stayed in Brooklyn before and it was a pain when everything I wanted to see and do was in Manhattan. I had to commute an hour each way (door to door) and plan my days around public transport timings.

The girls probably don’t want the experience of suburban NY life, they want the tourist experience!

Staying in manhattan you can simply walk to lots of places as it’s so compact, and walking is a great way to experience the 🍎. I don’t think the boroughs are necessarily much cheaper either. Try upper west side.

Thanks. I have never had a problem with four in a room it’s so much cheaper but they are nightmares getting ready. I’m just wondering whether to avoid Halloween altogether and book the week before

We stayed in Queens. Only 15 mins away from Manhattan on the Subway.

Is it your first time? If it’s first time then you’re doing all the Manhattan sightseeing then deffo stay there

EachandEveryone · 18/08/2025 20:06

No my 5th time but the girls first.
