Advice needed to make myself sleep on a plane - how do you do it?

Havingasmashingtime · 16/08/2025 09:39

I have a 9 hour flight coming up that leaves at 9pm so I need to sleep on it.

only the problem is I CANT SLEEP ON PLANES.

sadly I am a peasant so no first class beds for me.
i will be cramped into a small space sat upright.

any tips to force myself into a sleep?
any supplements I can take or drugs?
if so at what hour before the flight would I take it?

to add- when I arrive at the destination I need to be wide awake and raring to go - there will be no chill time

thank you in advance….

I cannot sleep upright on planes but I find I can lying down. So my tip would be to see if you can find a seat in an empty row. DH is usually very obliging and lets me sleep with my head in his lap but I wouldn’t recommend asking a stranger!

Oh lighten up @SummerEve
it’s funny! 😆

you stay hyper alert on flights in case you’re needed for a medical emergency (are you a medic)

whereas I pop the pills, and sleep like a baby

I'm the same, but a double Nytol and wine, and a leg hammock (from Amazon) and I'm all good

Leg hammock?! Sounds amazing!

Are you just aggressive?

No, just very surprised that you have become so unpleasant over my choice to stay alert on a flight. You have picked, sneered and pulled apart everything I have said. God knows why.

Here’s what helps me

Earplugs, really squishy foam ones so they fill every nook and cranny. Honeywell ones off Amazon are decent, or Quies brand

Eye mask, must be soft

Raising my feet somehow - either propped on a bag, or I make a hammock with a scarf tied round the tray table supports.

Neck pillow - I tried a few and chose one like this

Melatonin will help if you are actually tired but can’t drop off, it won’t make you sleepy if you’re not tired though.

Curlaway® Travel Cocoon Pillow.

If you might be needed for a medical emergency, then bravo

I would be nothing short of a liability if trying to medically assist someone on a flight. With or without a diazepam in me!

Please, stop twisting my words. I have not once said that I stay alert on flights in case I am needed for a medical emergency and you know it. I mentioned several situations whereby alertness would be beneficial. That’s it.

Oh come on

reread your own posts

you very much have that impression

but it’s fine if you don’t. Obviously. Says the poster who would probably make any medical emergency worse if involved!

Othersnotsomuch · 16/08/2025 21:15

You listed

medical emergency
disruptive passenger
turbulence

i said I’d be useless in a medical emergency, useless with a disruptive passenger and strap me in during a turbulence and job done.

which of these scenarios mean you feel compelled to stay “hyper alert”? Genuine question!

Please, show me any post where I have said I “feel compelled to stay hyper alert”? I haven’t.

Just look up foot hammock/rest online, about a fiver and they clip on your tray table and dont cause any bother to the passenger infront.

Ok so it’s the disruptive passenger and turbulence that compels you to stay “hyper alert”?

you said it was “my prerogative” not to remain hyper alert to help in a medical emergency and then said “some of us” don’t feel like that.

Apologies, I assumed that given you listed it as a scenario for needing to be hyper alert and said “rest of us”… I thought you were including yourself in this.

juless77 · 16/08/2025 21:23

can you buy phenegan over the counter .?

that and my diazepam…. Dreamy!

tothefareast80 · 16/08/2025 21:24

Try a Turtl neck pillow. I also find it impossible to sleep on planes but melatonin plus one of those pillows works! The pillows are not like regular neck pillows - they actually stop your head bobbing around. Total game changer!

Othersnotsomuch · 16/08/2025 21:26

Night all

all this talk of sleep, has made me sleepy!

Lots of PP are saying to use Melatonin. Is this available OTC in the UK? Do you just take one dose before a flight or do you have to take it for a while to get the effect?

There's plenty of melatonin being sold on fb and insta adverts. Not stupid expensive, so im investing before my Australian flight next month.

Cranberryavocado · 16/08/2025 21:34

I usually drinknwine and watch a really boring film. Take comfy socks and a travel pillow. Wear leggings and a sleep bra, with baggy teeshirt. I cant sleep on planes but with this combo i can snooze at least.

ForWarmPeachBird · 16/08/2025 21:36

Zopiclone

feet raised as much as possible, use your bag as a little footstool.

blanket tightly tucked under body like swaddling.

keep seat belt on so you aren’t disturbed.

Livpool · 16/08/2025 21:52

Phenergan as PPs have suggested

doubleshotcappuccino · 16/08/2025 23:39

My fail safe: huge carb loaded meal before I get on - not fast food but just like Sunday lunch size and then one glass of red and never any tv - and download Spotify sleep stuff

Anushka · 17/08/2025 00:35

I never sleep anywhere except bed, but on a night flight a glass of wine, peppermint tea, a pillow, noise cancelling over ear headphones with some non discript music (classical, jazz, James blunt pop type), floppy hoddie and eye mask, and I will drift off for a bit at least, even sat upright m! Other end limp along to a reasonable bedtime ( after 6pm ) and then allow myself to crash.

Bowies · 17/08/2025 00:53

Twattergy · 16/08/2025 09:52

Perhaps reframe it as 'getting rest' to take the pressure off. Ideas include:

Exercise during the day before
Avoid alcohol, drink plenty water and eat lightly
Super comfy clothing
Eye mask
Nice oils for face/hands
Sleep/soothing sounds on headphones

If you need to be perky the next day avoid alcohol and melatonin.

Agree with this.

Breathing exercises and guided meditation on headphones with eye mask in lieu of sleeping will be a good rest for your mind and body and takes the pressure off “trying to sleep”.

Some of the suggestions are actually dangerous!

Melatonin

Or lots of wine

How do you get Melatonin in UK please?

minipie · 17/08/2025 08:52

Buy it online from abroad
