Should I still have a fever/ feel like this with a Chest infection?

3.5 weeks ago I thought I had a chest infection as it was wheezing, and coughing up lovely big lumps of green mucus. So I went to the docs and she had a good listen to my chest and said it was viral.

3 weeks later I was still really struggling with it, and I'd had heart palpitations and shakey hands. The doctor still couldn't hear anything in my lungs but I was tachycardic and had a low grade fever. So I was given clarithromycin antibiotics to take.

4 days later and my chest is a bit better, but still not great (tight/ clicking?!/ Still have a nasty cough but not as frequent, still have green phlegm I occasionally cough up. And I still have a low fever (37.5°) but it does sometimes go down to 37.3. however when I checked my temp this morning it was 36.8 so I assumed I was finally on the mend and didn't bother asking the docs for a follow up call. This evening my temp is back to 37.5 and I feel shite. Should I still be feeling this way? I've never had a chest infection this bad before.

Just to caveat I know this is just chat and no one can give me medical advice but has anyone had a similar experience?

I would definitely ask for a review OP, it may be that you require different antibiotics. I’m not a medical professional but I am someone who has had chest infections my whole life, and pneumonia twice! The first time I had pneumonia, I needed 3 different types of antibiotics, and ended up in hospital for IV antibiotics in the end. Quite a long drawn out process.

She needs to test the green stuff, after 3 months of this myself I ended up very unwell and turned out I had a bacterial flu in my lungs that came across as viral!

The clicking might be in your throat if they can't find noise when they to your lungs. I've had quite similar now since June and had that cocktail thrust when I breathe. Sore throat then a very chesty cough with lumps of green, which has been there since early July, then a sore throat again at the same time as the cough. I have been on holiday since beginning of July so I'm getting rest. I think it's FINALLY clearing up now. Still coughing a bit but it's less and the clicking when breathing at night/ in morning has stopped.

Cocktail thrust? = clicking noise

I'm sorry you're feeling so ill. It is common for it to take a long time to recover, particularly If the virus is covid, or if you have a secondary bacterial infection which can happen because the original viral infection suppressed the immune system and allowed the bacterial infection to take hold. Clarithromycin won't do anything for a virus but it's a broad spectrum antibiotic so will help most bacterial infections. I think it's just going to be a matter of time and getting plenty of rest. Hope you feel better soon 💐

Cocktail thrust made me have a coughing fit 😂

Thanks everyone. No temp at all today, just a really tight chest when I wake up so fingers crossed the end is nigh!

Sorry! 🤣 Maybe cleared some phlegm at least. (I use swype keyboard and I'm careless about checking).
