Holidays- love being away but not sleeping in strange beds- anyone?

Is this just me?

I've become unable to settle in a strange bed in either a holiday cottage or a hotel. This has got worse with age - in my 20s and 30s I didn't give a hoot.
Now I'm mid 60s, have a lovely comfy home, and really don't enjoy getting into a bed that someone else has just vacated hours before.

Whether it's a 5* cottage or a luxury hotel, makes no difference.

This all came to a head a few years back when, at a cottage we loved and had visited for years, the owners started asking us to strip the sheets on leaving. The mattress protector was disgusting- stained as if there'd been a year or orgies.

I feel a bit pathetic but is this just me?

Where possible I take one of my pillows, that helps.

Same… by the 4th night I end up sleeping through pure exhaustion. I need a memory foam pillow, so when I’m on a uk holiday it’s fine, I take it with me, but We are going to America for 2 weeks in April, don’t know how I’m gonna manage that.

Oh dear, I am going to sound neurotic here, but this is a big issue for me.

I bought a 4 tog Duvet a couple of years ago just to take on holiday. It gets packed in a vacuum bag along with a bottom sheet, my own cover and 2 pillows.

You would be surprised how small the pack is.

Of course I can only do it when driving, but it makes a massive difference to my holiday enjoyment.

I always take my own pillows if we’re on a driving holiday. Away at the moment in a nice place but the bed is a tad too hard and there are no blackout curtains so it was light early which woke me up - Grrr.
