A round of toast

If you ordered a round of toast, would you expect to get one slice or two?

I’ll go first:

A slice of toast - one piece
A piece of toast - one piece
A round of toast - two pieces

Justification:

A round of drinks: more than one drink
A round of golf: more than one hole

My husband agrees with me but several of our friends don’t. Who’s right?

When I am in a cafe I ask for 2 slices of toast.

Yes, the reason is because it would be annoying to make toast one slice at a time when you could make two or four. It doesn't shed any light on the meaning of the word 'round' in this context though.

Nor do most of the other posts on the thread. Confused

A 'source'

Lol

Yes, let me just pull up my thesis on golf.

So you made up some nonsense?

This is a good point - most will hold two slices cut in half at a minimum…

Not sure if such establishments exist any more or certainly rarer, but when I was younger and went to b&b & guesthouses, the host at breakfast would ask “another round of toast? ” Out would come triangle slices of toast in a silver toast rack. Therefore to me that is a round of toast.

Why? Does it also cover the history and etimology of golf? You might want to consider changing the name to something that describes it better for the SEO

My DH agrees with your DH, and I agree with you.

A slice is a slice, a round is two slices.

This happened to me once at work and I nearly fucking cried.

I hadn't eaten since yesterday lunchtime (my own fault for being a 19 yo coke head/piss head) 🙄

But we weren't allowed out at all in work, no break from 8.45am- 7.30pm. that's another story...😞
But there were a couple of guys who's job it was to get breakfasts/lunches for everyone.

I asked for a round of toast. With marmite I think. The shop in question had lovely bread and used real butter.

I got my round of toast...ONE slice. And it was the end bit just before the heel so tiny. 😭

It literally ruined my life temporarily!

From then onwards I always made sure to order 'two slices of toast'.

Always 😉

Good Choice

A round of bread/toast is one slice.

A round of sandwiches is two slices.

This

KaitlynnFairchild · 16/08/2025 13:19

I would have thought just one slice, it had never occurred to me it could be anything else!

OSTMusTisNT · 16/08/2025 13:21

Two slices each, cut into triangles with salted butter.

HansHolbein · 16/08/2025 13:24

I’ve never heard the phrase round of toast/sandwiches so wouldn’t know what it meant.

One slice of toast means one, and two slices of toast means two in my life.

A sandwich means two slices of bread.

ApartFromAllThat · 17/08/2025 16:15

A round of something is never one unless it's a ball. If the answer to how many slices of toast is a round of toast then there's no requirement for round to ever be used. Voted for more than one but really wanted more than two as an option. I do like the toaster slot theory though. Unless its a one slotter! I'm far too invested in this already 😂
