Holiday and airport anxiety

I am taking my kids on holiday soon, including a plane journey circa 2.5 hrs.
Im very anxious about it and I do tend towards anxiety anyway.

I've not been on a plane in many many years.
Do you have any top tips?
I have got entertainment packed for the kids - colouring, audio books, snacks.

I am really anxious about the airport and what I need to do.
Have I missed anything from the below?

  1. Go to check in desk with passports.
  2. Check in luggage. Collect boarding passes.
  3. Go to security.
  4. Find the gate. Wait until it opens and give the boarding passes over.

Sorry for the rambling, I want to feel confident in what i am doing or my son will pick up on it.

You'll probably need to check in online before you go, different airlines/tour operators have different dates by when you must do this. You then get your boarding pass which you can store on your phone or print out if you want a paper copy.

Identify op I’m the same and also off on holiday in a few days! Your steps look fine to me, you may find you don’t need to check in your baggage at a desk as lots of airlines have self check in/automated services now but there’s always staff around to help you navigate.
Where are you off to?

Yes this order is correct.
Make sure your timings are right!
Obviously make sure your bags are the correct weight and size and you don’t have any prohibited items in your hand baggage.
Have a wonderful holiday.

You may have to check in before you travel so best to find out if you have to in advance

Who are you flying with/where are you going?

Parksinyork · 14/08/2025 19:42

You normally download your boarding passes before you go to the airport.

Make sure you know the rules for what you can take on a plane for the airports you are using.

EyeLevelStick · 14/08/2025 19:51

If you post your airline and airport someone will be able to give step by step instructions!

check in online if you can, as this can be done in advance. Print copies of your boarding passes, as it’s much easier for getting through security, if you have to scan them the passes.

take a cross shoulder bag for your passports, money and tickets, to keep your hands free. a back pack can be used for the rest of your stuff.

Hoodies or light jackets for the plane, as the plane can be cold.

bring an empty water bottle to fill up past security for the plane. you can buy food/drink past security, but it can be expensive. we buy supermarket meal deals for the plane (use the drinks before hand).

plan your travel and allow plenty of time for delays - it’s not only the time it takes to get to the airport, it’s getting to the checking desk, queuing for bag drop offs, getting through security and finding your way to the boarding gate.

go to the loo before going to the boarding gate - providing head to the gate once it’s announced, you’ll have plenty of time. better for you all to go before getting on the plane.

check what you can and can’t take in hand luggage and pack accordingly, so you don’t have to leave anything at security.

as you go through security, you may have to take your electricals(phone, tablets etc) out of our bag for scanning, so it’s worth keeping them easily accessible until you get through security.

Check in online: check when you can do this, some airlines are up to a month before you fly, some are 24 hours.

Download boarding passes to your phone (and print copies).

Check in bags: Check airline's policy on recommended time ahead of flight to be at airport (2/3 hours).

Check the size and weight requirements for the bags you have checked in, and for everyone's hand luggage.

Security: depending on the airport, the 100ml liquid rules might have been lifted, and you might not have to take electricals out of bags. Check what is not allowed in hand luggage.

Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the airport (parking/taxi/bus/lift), to check in bags, to get through security, and to find your gate.

Sit at the gate with hours to spare as you've allowed waaaay too much time! Try and amuse small children without spending your life saving at WH Smith.

Fab advice from everyone, how old are the kids? Sorry if I missed that, if they have electrical items .. make sure fully charged and carry a charger to top up or power bank - keeps everyone happy.
Also, when mine were younger I did a mini pass the parcel with a small silly gift on each layer to keep them amused. The sophisticated scanners should allow this in hand luggage but do check what’s allowed. Hope this helps!
