What’s your tried and tested treatment/cure for mouth ulcers?
I have the biggest one I’ve ever seen right on the tip of my tongue and it’s so painful. I sound like I have a speech impediment and it keeps pressing/catching on my teeth.
eating and drinking is also sore, even water brings tears to my eyes

Look up Weleda Ratanhia mouthwash, it has been my go-to for mouth ulcers for many years - used to be called Medicinal mouthwash but the ingredients seem the same. You can apply it neat on a cotton bud.

iglu is bloody amazing stuff 😱
thank you to everyone who recommended it. It’s feels odd on my tongue but the relief it’s giving is so worth it. I have no idea how it’s staying on but I’ll never be without it!

Have a gluten intolerance/ wheat allergy test. £60-70 online to do them all. Likely wheat allergy. Repeat ulcers most common sign.

I get a lot of these and find orajel is brilliant. It numbs the pain immediately. Also you can get a special mouthwash chlorhexidine that is specifically for mouth ulcers and gum problems and using that for a couple of days really helps too.

I use alcohol mouthwash. It hurts like an absolute arse but it helps it to heal faster. Perhaps making it hurt even worse for a minute makes the pain from before seem less bad.

That made me sound like quite the masochist.

Difflam mouthwash really helped me. You have to ask the pharmacist for it.

On line tests for allergy/intolerance are a waste of money and not generally regarded as accurate and lead to a vast over self diagnosis of gluten intolerance etc.

The most common reason for ulcers is anaemia or b12 deficiency although there are dozens of conditions that cause mouth ulcers therefore anyone suffering recurrent ulcers or an ulcer that doesn’t heal within two weeks should see a dentist who can arrange necessary tests and treatment , if necessary.

this has only been around for 5/6 days, it’s about the third time in a year I’ve had one in the same place, never usually this big/bas but I’ll keep an eye on it and if I keep getting them I’ll be sure to get it looked at. I’ve got the dentist next month for a check up as well so I’ll mention it then and show him the daily picture progress

Mouth ulcers can be a sign of Coeliac disease (which is a serious autoimmune disorder rather than an allergy or intolerance), although with normal iron levels it would be unlikely the OP has Coeliac disease.

I’m just posting incase this thread comes up on any future searches: Coeliac disease is vastly under diagnosed, on average it takes 13 years to get a diagnosis and only 1/3 of patients currently with CD have a diagnosis.

Yay! It does feel so strange doesn’t it but it just helps. Glad to have helped x

Thankfully the beast that is the ulcer is on its way out. I can speak properly and eat without it being painful. The iglu stuff helped massively, I think the size of it and the location made it difficult for it to stay on for long but for the time it did it was a god send.

Warm not hot salt water, swished around and spat out.

Charabanc · 18/08/2025 18:53

Anbesol. It's a BASTARD but it does work.

My dentist told me that mouth ulcers are due to lack of iron. Who knew! I always thought it was vitamin C.
