Ds is 10 and has autism he's working at year 1 level and has a EHCP. Hes about to go into year 6. And im woundering if he may also have moderate learning difficulties. If I want this looked into im guessing i approach SENCO at the school? But what if they don't agree to look into it? And even if they do is it likely to take a long time?

Has he had a recent assessment by an EP focusing on his cognition? Something like a WISC 5?

I have no idea. I just know we he was diagnosed with autism. The school then applied for EHCP. He was seen by an educational psychologist. That was when he was in year 3. I don't knkw what WISC is?

Would the educational psychologist have looked into moderate learning difficulties at the time off assessments?

I would ask for an EP assessment as part of his annual review and specifically ask for learning profile and yes to WISC.

Especially as you’ll need to name a secondary school and if he has MLD and working at year 1 a school for pupils with MLD is likely a better place for him.

Speak to the senco and ask for her support in this. They will have evidence of his learning projectors and where he is at etc.

I going to quickly message LA. As we have been in contact over his EHCP /recent review at the end of year 5.

LA have already said its a good idea to put sen school down due to his levels but im still woundering if its an idea to look into moderate learning difficulties.

Im gonna message LA see what they say.

Forgot to say school senco does not seem so good as it used to be since senco was changed.

@Imagoodperson999 do you have a copy of his report from when he was diagnosed? If he has been assessed by an EP previously, I would have thought their report would have covered all the unusual cognitive tests that form their assessment.
EPs do not give diagnoses of autism, that requires a psychologist for a clinical diagnosis.

indoorplantqueen · 14/08/2025 12:15

@TeaandHobnobsEP’s more often than not do not do standardised tests like the wisc as part of their normal assessments. Only if there’s a specific need/ hypothesis.

OP what do school say are the barriers to your child learning? It is attention, behaviour, inflexibility etc. children with autism may not have learning difficulties per se but may struggle to demonstrate their knowledge within the confines of the curriculum (and how it is expected to be demonstrated).

indoorplantqueen · 14/08/2025 12:17

@TeaandHobnobsEP’s can and do diagnose autism as part of a multi disciplinary team. LA EP’s may not, but EP’s work in a range of settings, including clinical ones. The role has broadened greatly over the past decade or so.

Apologies @indoorplantqueen, I could only go by my own experience

Ds was diagnosed by clinical psychologist. Either way hes had a diagnosis.

Do you mean education psychologist would have likely looked at moderate learning difficulties when they were doing the assessments for the EHCP ?
